I recently failed smog because my timing was advanced at 19atdc. To pass the minimum is 9atdc. I pulled the spout and put on the timing light and my timing mark is everywhere, it doesn't stop moving. Does anybody have an idea what's going on? Thank you on advance for your help.
Trying to think of the more obscure reasons I've had when the timing mark isn't stable.
Your harmonic balancer might be slipping. If that's the case, your timing is correct, but the vulcanized rubber that holds the outer part of the balancer onto the inner part has lost its grip, allowing it to slide around, which lets the timing mark move.
Another possibility is that the pin that holds your distributor gear in place is weak/cracked, etc. The gear isn't solidly affixed to the shaft on the distributor, so it allows it to wobble, which will make your timing mark move.
