Broken timing gear?
I have an '89 E150 with a 4.9, was driving down the road yesterday, hit the gas hard, and the van died, couldn't restart it - sounded different when trying to turn it over. Pulled the cap, the rotor is not turning when cranking, and I am unable to turn the rotor by hand, so I assume the distributor drive gear is ok. Does this mean I have a broken timing gear? How much of a hassle is it to replace them (assuming this is the case) compared to doing a timing chain? Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.
