Timing WAY OFF!!
We set the points to .016 and it started up great, we marked damper at 6 degrees, the damper would not move as we turned the distribtor, when we turned the dist. there was no change in the motor at all, damper stayed a 30 deg....The engine died we could not get it started up again ( we got plent of spark)...we played with the dist...tryng to get it started, our last effort resulted in a MAJOR BACKFIRE that the entire street heard and scared us half to death....
What does it sound like....Distributor bad, Timing chain or what!!
Is there any reference material available online.
Thanks Ray
you sure you had your timing light on #1 Front pass side cyl?
pull out #1plug. with the coil wire removed, put a finger over the plug hole, have someone bump the motor over until your finger is blown away from the hole( won't hurt). Then, see how close the timing marker is to 0deg. If it is pretty close,it should be, turn the motor by han until it is lined up with 0. Then pull the dist.cap and see if it is pointing at #1 plug wire. If not, you can line it up and see it it will fire up, if it still won't start, or backfires badly, it's probably the timing chain.
