Abnormal Engine Blowby?

I’m starting to think this project is a bit beyond my capabilities and time availability. This engine blowby seems like a lot and didn’t really go away after I let it idle for about 10 minutes. What are your thoughts?

there was quite a bit from opening the oil cap and the vent was accumulating thick oil inside.

I cracked each injector cap and every time the engine had a really good “bog down” response, but this blowby still just seems like so much!

That looks better than mine.

These trucks apparently always had a lot of blow-by. Some of the more senior members (pun intended), those who were adults when these truck were new, seem to indicate that the level of blow-by you see is normal. My truck and I have similar born-on dates.

I would say that if you don't have crazy oil consumption, don't worry. Check to see if your CDR is full of oil, indicating blow-by is pushing/carrying oil into your intake (that does not mean you need a new CDR, best not to go down that road).

If you have blow-by/oil consumption and want to try to slow it down, you can do any one or a combination of the following:
  1. Rebuild the engine
  2. Flush the engine and hope to free up rings (BG EPR/109 seems to be the real deal)
  3. Use engine restore
  4. Install a RDT
  5. Drive it as if nothing is wrong
The cost and efficacy of each varies.

That looks like completely normal blowby for one of these engines.

Since most blowby is routed through the always open CDR, you have no idea how much blowby you really have at the oil fill tube unless you first block off the CDR valve.
Flush the engine and hope to free up rings (BG EPR/109 seems to be the real deal)
That's the worst thing you can do plus it has no effect on stuck piston rings.
Install a RDT
Second worst thing you can do.

5. Drive it as if nothing is wrong.

Blow By and CDR and RDT constantly come up.
All engines have some Blow By, more as they age, (mileage wise)
The CDR routs the BB into the intake to be burned instead of sending
into the atmosphere.
A lot of people dump crap into their fuel tanks, but worry about BB.
Interesting.

Truly the worst. This will not only loosen gunk and eventually oil-starve your engine, it will blow your grandma's engine too.

Just slightly less worser, as Greta Thunburg will come and pour engine flush into your oil-fill neck, while giving you the "How DARE YOU?" stare.

Also, because sarcasm rarely comes across correctly on the internet, Ray's advice is sound. Do your research and calculate your risk/reward. I like the do-nothing camp if you aren't drinking huge amounts of oil, and possibly even if you are. As other have alluded, a new CDR wont fix that. It remains a mystery to me the mechanics of how a RDT "eliminates" oil consumption, but anecdotes abound. I have theories but I fear Greta.

Right, as I've said before, a CDR is blamed on every IDI forum all through the years for everything but a flat tire.

Thanks for all the input and help guys.

I’ve been thinking of using a Lucas oil Stabilizer and my normal diesel kleene. Your thoughts?

Those actions are unlikely to hurt anything, and many reports exist of IDI folks using lucas without catastrophe. So I wouldn't hesitate to try. I ran it in my engine once and the engine continues to roll on. Many advocates for and detractors from Lucas. BITOG is a good place to research that stuff.

Funny you mention that, I had some extreme Blow By out of my R/F tire last Wed.
I was thinking, than damn CDR again?
