Most of you probably already know about this mod but it's been a while since a thread was going about it and I recently did it and I was impressed. In the stock air intake for the 460 (and probably other engines I did it on my 7.5), there is a plastic connection between the air tubes coming from the airbox and those going into the throttle body. This also connects to the idle intake so it is necessary, however, this mod doesn't affect idle mixtures from what I've seen.
Anyway, part of this plastic piece is an air horn or venturi on the side going towards the air box. The engineers at Ford designed this for what was supposed to promote more air movement through the intake and reduce noise but it really doesn't do the first and why would we want the second right? However, if you don't want a louder intake this doesn't make it all that much louder just rumbles and is more throaty throughout the rev range from what I saw.
What I did and what I've seen many others do is simply saw off the restrictive venturi that is part of that piece to allow more air to flow more freely. Just used my sawsall with a plastic blade and then sanded down the edges making sure there were no plastic shavings that could get into the engine. Put it all back together and went for a drive.
Immediately noticed a difference in torque and power as I pulled away from my house. The throttle response has increased a lot and I can get it to burn rubber from any stop even with the 35's I have which I could not do before even full throttle. The engine isn't louder necessarily but I would say it is marginally more throaty and that rumble that you feel in certain rpm ranges has expanded and is lower in the throttle response as well. A lot of people say they get 5-10 hp increase from this which is impressive and some even say 2 mpg increase which I don't know about the gas mileage but we'll have to see that would sure be nice with a 460. So for any new people out there or anyone who wants to do this but is unsure here's another guy who tried it and saw the results. And remember theres plenty in the junkyards if you mess up lol.
Not to take away from you posting pictures James, but for everyone else that is interested here is a YouTube video that I found a while back where the guy does this mod.
It was the first thing I did to my truck. Hurts nothing and is free.
haha not taking away at all I haven't had time to take any pictures yet got lots of projects going on. There are multiple helpful yt videos about it some for campers since a lot have 460s. Thanks for linking that in. And yeah gotta love free mods haha
hopefully i can get those pics today guys it's pretty simple tho. Also an update on gas mileage I havent calculated it yet I just filled up however I did feel like I was using less gas I had about a quarter tank left when I did the mod and it lasted about 50 miles which isn't great but better than i usually get haha
