I have a 1966 with a 3 on the column. I am wanting power steering just for the ease of being in a parking lot often. I have a Saginaw box but from what I have read it is too long. (From a truck)
now I have a friend who has a PS 1966 mustang. He is interested in converting his to the Saginaw box, and I am interested if the Bendix from his mustang will work in my truck.
It seems like an odd swap but I know some people here are quite knowledgeable about differences in steering boxes.
The pickup truck Bendix steering gear is different. Your three-speed truck was available with Bendix power steering and it can be retrofitted without any column modification. You will see that some people think they are worth a lot of money, but you can still find one cheap and have an expert rebuild it.
Eric.
Okay I’ll give Flashback a call this weekend or next week.
I didn’t know the mustang was power assist. Any idea if that can be used in my truck in some way or would it take a lot of fab work?

I wouldn't even consider it. The Mustang box is a light weight and the rams always leak, not the best design. It would require lots of fabrication if it even could be done. I removed the power assist and put in a manual box on my Mustang. You would be ahead to find one made for the truck.
The PO of my truck installed some ebay power steering kit with a new gear box, saginaw pump, then cut the column, and moved the 3 speed to the floor with a mr gasket kit. It was pure $#/+ in every conceivable way.
So, with input from other forum members, I got a red head box (3.5 turns), power steering blank column from flashback, firewall mounting plates/seal, vintage air power steering kit, and hurst master shifter. A lot of money and time to fix the abuse of previous owners, but it drives amazing now. My only regret is not doing the work sooner.
Probably. I hate the manual clutch mechanism for the top loader. Why didn't they just use a cable? And with the 3.00 rear gear there's a bit of a hole between 2nd and 3rd gear, although 2k rpm at 70mph is nice
