Setting the timing.

Guys. Got the 84 f-150 home. Got the truck cleaned up, it’s been sitting in the barn since 98. My wife’s uncle was trying to get it running, he replaced the plug wires, cap, rotor, duraspark box. But he put the wires on then pulled them off the plugs ( my guess to do the plugs) and that’s where it has sat. I know where cylinder 1 is and I know where it is on the cap, but I want to pull the dizzy to prime it before I try to bump it over ( will have a new fuel pump with a line into a small gas can and not the tank) so it will have fresh gas and want to make sure, if I pull the dizzy and mark it before I pull it, should it keep close to time if I set #1 at tdc. Thanks for the help guys.

Why do you want to pull the distributor? If you do not want it to start, pull the wire off the coil. If you pull the distributor and crank it over, you will not be turning the oil pump while the engine is turning over.

If buy priming it you mean spinning the pump to pre oil everything, yes, you can pull the distributor to do it. Gary's Garagemahal has the manual online for removal and installation. Look under Documentation, Engine, and choose your engine. I'd provide the link, but my phone doesn't like Gary's site.

On mine (don't know how original it it), the rotor will turn during removal about an eighth of a rotation due to helical gears. Marked both installed and removed positions to make it easier.

Yes. I was wanting to prime the oil pump. It’s been sitting for about 20 years. Did the marvel oil in the cylinders for about a week. Turned the engine over by hand several times and replaced fuel pump with line running to a 5 gallon can and did an oil and filter change. I went ahead and put in new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, duraspark controller ( on the drivers fender) and a new battery as it didn’t have one. Just didn’t want to try and start it dry. Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

Just pull the coil wire so it will not start and use the starter to get the oil moving.
It will also get gas from the can in to the carb so when you go to start it should fire off with little cranking.

There is no need to pull the dist. Pull the coil wire or the wire connector of the coil ,then pull the plugsa
Pulling the plugs will do a few things, it will make it easier for the starter to wind over and there will be no loading on main bearings (other than the friction of the rings) from the compression stroke. You will also be spinning it over fast enough that you will be flinging some oil up on to the cam. (Of course, make sure the oil is changed)

But if you want to pull the dist to pre-lube, make sure the engine is TDC #1 Compression. When you install your primer drive extension and before you move it, mark the orientation on the front or back or wherever, just so you can put it in the same spot as when you started, this way when you finish up the drive extension and in turn, the oil pump hex drive will be right back in the same position as when you started and the dist will drop right back in with no fiddling. You can just mark the engine block and dist before you remove it so you line it back up when you reinstall. Of course be sure to note the rotor location also and make sure it ends up where it is supped to.
