That large fat hose with the ridges in it? That is the hot air hose that went to the original aircleaner. The original aircleaner had a metal tube with a air valve in it, and then a hose that went over to the radiator support. There was a sensor in the aircleaner that sensed the temp of the air. It controlled the air valve and that drew hot air through that hose and mixed it with the cold air from the radiator support hose and fed it into the aircleaner. This makes the engine run better in extreme cold and extreme hot weather.

I'm sure one of the purest will say different...but us old guys from the 1970's removed that from are cars when we put a different air cleaner on like you have. I never plugged that opening on the manifold heat shield. Then when I put headers on...

No need to plug it. The purpose is for the aircleaner to pull air up around the exhaust manifold when cold to help warm the engine up as well as to help prevent carb icing.

I thought of installing it on the 306 I am building with shorty headers as I am partially concerned of icing on my 800cfm Sniper Stealth EFI.

I would say save it, but you can get those hoses in the store. I see you live in Colorado. If you drive it in the winter you may be hooking all that back up.
