I am new to posting on any forum. I have a truck that I have acquired that my great granddad bought brand new. I know for a fact that everything is original but I don’t know what year the truck is for sure. I found the title for the truck and it was bought new in May of 1950. The vin number is 98RD292406 The stamp on the firewall is 3H127L30 and the plate in the glove box is 98RD292406-9RD. If someone could give me the info for this that would be great. I am trying to collect the info on this truck.

Hi Kris, welcome to the forum! Having a family truck to be the next caretaker of is a cool thing, and a big responsibility. Congratulations on your new job.
If you can provide a picture of the firewall stamping, that could be helpful. From your serial number (VIN) we can tell it's a V8 F2. The 3H1 in the firewall stamp doesn't make sense. Something there is incorrect. They can be oddly stamped and hard to read accurately, sometimes. Those digits are your color code and build plant. What color is the truck? Or more appropriately, what color was it originally, if it's been changed?
27L should be the build date code, which translates to November 27, 1949. Back then, the model year followed the calendar year, so it would technically be a 1949 model, but many times in those days cars and trucks were routinely titled as the year sold, so it would not be unusual for your title to say it's a '50 if it was sold in May. It probably wasn't delivered to the dealer until 1950 anyway. What does your title say. Whether it says 49 or 50 is really of no consequence, and I'd just roll with it either way if it were me. Do you know the selling dealer, or at least the location (city/state)?
Oh, by the way, truck pics from new members is mandatory. We'll be waiting
Thanks for responding back. The truck was originally black and has never been painted. It as been a farm truck all it’s life until the late 70s the license plate on the truck was 1978 we think that was when it was parked in the barn. The truck was sold new in Fayetteville Tn. Not sure of the dealer name my Dad thinks it was sold as a cab and chassis then the flat bed was added by a local iron shop that was also in Fayetteville but not sure of that either. My Grandfather has past away several years ago he would have knew the history of the truck but there are a lot of unknowns now and I am trying to piece together as much info as possible.The firewall photo is hard to read
Your pictures didn
t come through. One other thing you can check I forgot to mention that could give us a clue, on the patent plate, the little square tag on the firewall near the hood hinge (left side as you look under the hood) should have your serial number listed, and possibly also 2 or 3 letters which would be the assembly plant code. Some tags don't have them, others have them following the serial number, and still others have a separate box marked Branch with the letters in it. Please check for that and let us know what you find. It should match what is supposed to be on the firewall stamp. Being from Tennessee, the most logical letter combos would be LU, MP, or NR.
The last photo is hard to read but it is of the Inside passenger door. The marking were painted white and in a stencil form the first one looked like a Y or V the second looked like a 8 or 9 then a dash then an upside down ohm sign like on a volt meter then a dash the last is a 71
3HM27L
color code 3=black
HM=Highland Park, Michigan assembly. HP in the branch box confirms. HP and HM were both used for Highland Park.
27L=assembly date November 27, 1949
