Bart, this is a pretty common deal on the 17+ tucks although some with earlier trucks have it too. There are a few threads on it in the 17+ area about it with a lot of theories but no solutions other than going AGM. It's mostly the driver side but both mine leaked. The dealer didn't want to replace the passenger unit because it wasn't as bad but replaced the driver side under warranty. When I got home, I listed them both on CL and ordered a pair of Odyssey AGMs from Amazon. They are sold at AutoZone as well but were on backorder there when I needed them. No problems since the swap other than my wallet taking a hit. I got $150 for the Motorcraft leakers to help offset a little.
It lasted about 30 days on my commercial lawn mowers before corrosion began to take over. The whip and most likely the stuff Dave posted above will outlast any other product because it is thick and gooey. The whip lasts about year on the mowers and will last the life of a battery in a vehicle. All depends on how much maintenance you want to do.
I just use those green and red felt rings. First sign of corrosion those batteries come out and new ones go in. I am about 5 years on my batteries so it's almost time to replace them. I have the Motorcraft lead acid batteries. I saw the other day that my dealer had Motorcraft AGM batteries on the shelf.
