sorry to be late answering this, but i just saw it. as others have already said, do not have both done at the same time.
i had left knee replaced 6 years ago and the right got better. doc said there is no need to replace the right one at this time.
mom had both replaced last year at 89, 6 months apart. the first one was "easy peasy" in her words.
second one she fell leaving the hospital and broke the femur 1 inch above the knee. spent another three weeks in hospital before they let he leave.
she now walks 1 mile a day to keep in shape. before the knee replacement, she was lucky to be able to walk the 200 foot to the mailbox without sitting down for 20 minutes.
thirty days to go. i am still doing my exercises . some times i slack off a little then i remember that i have to keep going .thanks for all the help and well wishes believe me it helps .thanks again
Will be thinking about you in June. Like Tom, I just found this post.
My wife goes in to have her right knee replaced in a couple of weeks so the comments have been interesting.
my right knee was always the worst. docs wanted to replace both back in 88 but i said not only no, but hell no.
i made it until 2010 when i hyperextended the left knee. fell and put the leg sideways 90 degrees at the knee, and forward around 45 degrees at the knee.
i wore a brace until 2015 when i could not take the pain any more.
the PT for the left knee made the right knee much better. it is still full of arthritis, close to bone on bone, and almost no cartilage in there, but it only hurts at night if i sleep on my back causing the knee to go full straight.
so i am waiting. what i really need done is both hips. they are totally shot.
Modern medicine is amazing. We live long enough to wear out parts, go in and change them out. Now if only they could do something for my hair, well and maybe a couple of other parts to make me look and feel like I am 30 again.
Due to bone on bone for many years, I had both my knees replaced in 2012, though they were done 10 weeks apart. Many surgeons will not do them at the same time. I worked in a desk job, and was only out of work for 3 weeks each time. During one of the recoveries, I walked a mile to the gym and back using a cane. The key is to work hard during your recovery. That means a lot of pain during your physical therapy, and a lot of work one your own. The worst part of the therapy was when they try to increase your range of motion. Some people who do not work hard to increase their range of motion may find themselves undergoing another surgery to break the scare tissue to get that range of motion. My knees are great now.......never any problems with them.
both of my knees are bad.my right knee was always the worst .quite a few years ago my right knee was bothering me so i went to a knee doctor and he gave me a shot .he said this will work for a while .you will be back in about 6 weeks.it lasted for over 10 years. everything was just like new.it must have been some old indian potion because it sure worked that was about 16 years ago . well my right knee started to bother me again so i went to this new doctor that was highly thought of .the first time he gave me a shot in the right knee (the left one was not bothering me at the time) and that lasted for about a year. later on it started to hurt more so i went back the second time and by this time the left one was starting to bother me i just put up with the pain until i finally said that is enough.so when i went back to the doctor he did an xray on both of my knees and that i when he showed me the xrays -bone on bone both knees .he did not try to talk me into anything .he asked me what do you want me to do, give you a shot or what? they are your knees you tell me what to do. if they are that bad do a replacement .he asked which one do you want done ? i said both .he said that normaly i would only do one at a time. you are in such great shape, but if that is what you want then i will do that .just remember that you will be in great pain and you have to do what the pt tells you to do and no short cuts
Sounds about right what the doc told you. Mine always said when it start affecting your quality of life, then you know it's time for the surgery. It's the best thing I ever did! Best of luck in what ever you decide.
there has been a change of plans--my wife and i were talking and she said i know that you want to have both of them done at one time so that you can get it over with but just stop and think about this-you are 6-2 and are 220 lbs-i am 5-2 and 120 lbs-we both are 80 yrs old and we have no one here to help me take care of you ,we are all alone what happens if some thing happens to me ? you cant take care of yourself-so how can you take care of me-not only that but now it is hurricane season-with both knees replaced how do you think that i am going to get you into the truck and then find a place to go-then drag you out of the truck and into a hotel -then when it is over we have to go back home-that means that i have to do it all over again .so we decided that it will be a lot easier on both of us if i only do one at a time so i called the dr and told him that i was just going to have the right one done for now .may 23 i have to go to the hospital for bloodwork-may 28 i have to see my family dr to get a release from him then june 7 i go for the operation .i hope that everything goes as planed .i really appreciate all the advice and all the well wishes
good thought plan from your better half.
i am sure everything is going to go as planned, and this is all going to be a non event for you.
from past personal experience, the worst part will be the first 7 days.
Well, I would have gone with both at once (but I'm younger and stubborn) . But when your wife throws that type of logic at you, the only option is do agree with her. Smart woman you have there.
well i went to the hospital yesterday for a pre-op. they did an ekg ,xray took blood and a bunch of information .now i have to go to my family doctor to get checked out and cleared from him- .friday june 4th i have to back to the hospital to be checked for covid-if everything is alright then i will have my surgery on monday june 7th.i made sure to tell them,do not for get to give me my shot i will let you know what happens .thanks again for all the support
My wife had her right one replaced 2 days ago. Home now, we're working on pain management carefully. Watching my wife get up and down, I have to say your wife is a wise woman. You'll do fine!
