New Exhaust

Got a mainly stock 2.7 eco-boost, just an intake and catch can. Intake gave me 1-3mpgs better and now I am out for more, looking for a nice exhaust to spruce it up. II have seen several kits a many different ranges, always have liked MBRP on my diesels so that's what I am looking at. Can't decide between a 4in kit and a 3in. I have seen where some people say the 4in robs low end power and that the 3in is all the eco-boost needs. Seems both give a good boost on the MPGs as well, If it drones, I will add another resonator/muffler. Does not matter to me, just want to know what people are doing out there in exhaust world. Also alternatively I have seen a lot of trucks with walker intermediate pipe and a new muffler added to their stock exhaust, real zombie but seems cool.
Guy in my local area has a 4in MBRP stainless kit for sale off is 150 for cheap due to it being a lease truck, got that one covered there.
Any input is greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum. Luckily, gone are the days of restrictive intake/exhausts from OEMs. Your factory intake was already a cold air intake and the stock paper filter is good for more CFM than the engine can consume at WOT.

It's great to hear they you're getting better MPGs, but it wasn't from changing the intake - likely a change in driving style.

Same can be said for the cat-back portion of the exhaust. The OEM is as free-floating as it gets and changing it won't actually help MPGs at all. If you're after sound, a resonator delete only sounds decent on the 2.7 without sounding annoying.

Now, if MPG gains are really what you're after you'll want to start changing downpipes and cats - those are the restrictive parts of the system. Expect to require a tune at that point however as you'll need to correct for the change.

Best thing for MPGs is a maintained vehicle and a well disciplined driver who will stay out of boost.

Good luck

I take it you enjoy the pissed off bumble bee on steroids sound because that’s exactly what you’re going to get by changing the exhaust on the 2.7 or 3.5 EB.

Don’t do it. .....Lol

Putting an exhaust on a 2.7 would never occur to me. Seems like it would sound like one of those F^&t cans running around these days.

It’s kinda like my 1968 straight 6. Sounds bitching at idle, but let it turn 4000 rpm and it sounds like a Dirt Devil vacuum with a a Cherry Bomb.

4” is too big for the stock turbos. Go with the 3”. Better yet, just install an AeroTurbine muffler. If you want a full exhaust, check out AWE. It’s the best V6 exhaust system I’ve heard yet.

Everyone has their own opinion on exhaust for these. I enjoyed the quietness, but wanted more sound eventually.
I found a great deal on a Diamond Eye 4 inch catback. I got the stainless (better than alumized, but not the high end stainless). Cost me 189. Free shipping.
I think 3" is more than adequate. Especially with stock tuning and stock downpipes. I chose the 4 mostly because of the sound I heard online. I run a 93 perf tune from 5star. K&n intake (removed the inline diffusers, definitely more intake noise, but it quickly just turns into a roar, instead of letting me hear my turbos spool). 4 inch superlift with 35x12x50r20 Milestar Patagonia M/T. With plans to upgrade the downpipes and cats. Plus upgrading the intercooler/charge pipes. Everything else that affects airflow in and out. Plus upgrading whatever needs replacing along the way.
Being a V6, with small displacement, having the firing order it does, and being turbo charged; are all strikes against anything close to a traditional truck with a V8 exhaust sound. I feel that the sound profile of most other companies is the wrong direction for our particular engine configuration. It's like they are working for a performance sound. To me it ends up sounding like great exhaust for a European sports car. Different levels and tones, but essentially the same. Like a controlled balance between popping and tone. When done terribly, it's Honda fart can city. At it's best, it seems a decent sound but not typically associated with a truck.
When I found a clip online of this system with the 2.7, I thought it sounded different than most other systems. My real life experience matches pretty much what I heard online and was expecting. A bit louder at idle, noticably louder when accelerating, loud but not ear splitting V6 scream during WOT. Off idle and low to mid RPMs has a deep tone. Not really a burble so much as a deep rumble. My first thought on the clip, and even now, it sounds similar to a diesel style exhaust. Like a deep steady tone. Volume increases with RPMs but the tone stays relativity the same. I would say a medium/medium high for the volume level. If you have neighbors, they may hear you, but I don't think you'll be waking or disturbing anyone. Quite frequently, I arrive home without alerting the dogs or the wife until I close my door.
When you go WOT you're begging to hear the V6 sound we've all come to love. The bass kinda fades but is replaced with like a hollow sound. With a 4 inch pipe and straight through muffler, you'd think it'd be loud. I guess it is, but it's not the popping burbling loud V8 or the tight raspy reverb of a V6 European sportscar. The tone makes it not seem loud to me.
I chose 4 inch single side factory exit behind rear wheel. The kit came with with all pipes and hardware. It also included a length of 20-30 extension pipe, to fit whatever cab/bed configuration. I had a bit of an issue getting all the clamps tight enough, but eventually everything sealed.
I guess it does drone, that is the sound profile of the muffler. I've never been bothered by any interior drone. I can hear it, but it doesn't reverberate. WOT with windows down doesn't affect having a conversation with a passenger. I don't find it any louder than the tire noise from the oversize tires. Easy and to converse or hear the factory radio.
At first I installed the muffler with the louvers openings towards the engine. I was surprised by how loud the 4 inch wasn't. I reinstalled the muffler with the openings facing away from the engine. At first I didn't really notice much of a difference. But after a few months, I would say it's a little but louder and rougher this way. I will probably change the muffler direction next oil change.
one other thing, there are clamps on both sides of the muffler, if I decide I want to try something else later, I only need a muffler.

Exhaust on the 2.7L is a very controversial topic. A lot of people prefer to keep it stock, because it doesn't sound like a V8 truck and that's what a lot of people are expecting to hear. However it's also personal preference to you not to other people. I would give you a word of caution, don't expect a great sounding exhaust if you are expecting something that sounds like a V8 or a diesel.

That said, I have an AWE exhaust on my truck. I like it and I get compliments all the time, but I also understand that it doesn't sound like a V8. It sounds best at low RPM, where I would say it actually sounds really good. In the mid-range it sounds kind of tinny and hollow, and at high RPMs it is loud and sounds powerful. In the cab there is no drone or excessive noise.

Here's an install video I did, with some clips at the end. Unfortunately it's really hard to accurately capture exhaust on camera but I hope it gives you some idea.

I love the mbrp on my 7.3 l diesel but I didn't think it was right for this truck.

AWE has to be the best sounding V6 exhaust on the market right now. V6 being the key term.

Special K yours sounds pretty good, but the 2.7a low end probably loses some grunt with the large diameter tubing.

I get the larger pipe, less back pressure. But doesn't spinning the turbo provide enough pressure? Then after the turbos are spinning, the least restriction possible is ideal, right?
