Probably to increase the noise removal of the muffler system...... I cut mine out years back. Anyone operating with a stock exhaust is not getting full effect of power available from their engine. Bigger is better 3.5 " with free flow muffler or if turbo'd straight pipe ...............
sorry i didnt mean that my banks exhaust has the screen, i was looking at a 94 f350 non turbo, and in the end of the tailpipe it has what looks like a metal screen of some sort.
Maybe it is to keep wasps, mice, and small birds out when you don't drive it for a few days. It'd be sad to see Tweety stuck to the garage door with soot!
A lot of the original tailpipes had the screens in them. I always figured they were to break up any chunks of soot that broke loose. Or in other words, what dwaymar said.
They usually rust out after a while, or someone takes a torch to them.
