A few days ago, a friends 94 F-150 Lariat 4x4 extended cab caught fire and was heavily damaged. The fire appeared to have started under the hood, on the driver's side. (Vehicle was unattended, in parking lot). A security camera on the lot recorded the event. The truck had been sitting for a while (not running), and suddenly smoke began coming from under the hood. It soon burst into flames, and was ruined before security and fire personnel could put it out. Does anyone know of any similar incidents involving these pickups? I know they had the ignition switch problem a few years ago, but this appeared to come from under the hood, near where the underhood relay/fuse center is located. This truck was a 300 6 cyl. w/ manual trans. On a related note, anyone know where I can get a deal on a good cab for a 1994 F-150 extended cab pickup?
No. Not even fog lights. The only things I think were added were a set of nerf bars and a bed cover. Interior of cab had hardly any flame. Heat from engine compartment melted dash.
I have a 94 F-150 Supercab 4.9L. Mine too caught on fire, not running, no one around. Luckly I was in the area and put it out before a lot of damage resulted. About three months before the fire I had the Alt replaced. Well there is a connector that should have been replaced with the alt. Appearently the connector is defective and the result is fire. I believe there is a service bulletin on this. Have your friend go to the local parts store and ask to see an alt for his vehicle. In the box I am sure he'll find all the information on the new connector. It is worth looking into. Maybe if the connector is the original he can talk a Ford dealer for help/advice. Good Luck
I knew they had problems with the alternator connection, but I don't suspect it here because the fire appeared to start on the opposite side of the truck.
a new connector comes with every new or reman alternator, i have replaced at least a dozen alternators and they all come with the connector. as far as a recall, check out nhtsa.gov
