The other night, my wife says your truck lights are on. i knew i had turned them off. Went out and opened the door and smoke billowed out. The dash was on fire were the security light and headlight switch was. The dash melted from the center of the instrument panel towards the drivers door. The harness coming under the carpet and up under the dash was on fire. Got the fire out.
Truck was just painted and completely redone. I am sick. Liability insurance so i am on my own. 1998 F150 4x4 xlt in mint condition. Do you think I should fix it or junk it? Checked with ford garage and the harness that burnt is discontinued. Wonder why?
Help me out....anybody seen this before? What would you do?
Mannn! Sounds like the GEM could have caused the melt down. Get a totaled truck [98 specific] and start part swapping. Check the windshield for leaks, if it was the GEM water leaking on it can cause the problems.
update: talked to ford and they want me to deliver it to nearest dealership for an evaluation. The letter says they want the service manager to fax an estimate of the repair cost to ford. Ford wants all my service history, registration and any other pertinent items sent to them.
The windsheild was replaced about four months ago because of a stone hitting it. I doubt the windsheild was leaking.
What do you think of the odds that ford will agree with me that a defective wiring harness was the culprit. There are alot of trucks with a defective wiring harness on them.
Give me some feedback on what i should expect. At least ford is willing to look at it. I know if they dont help...my next truck will be a GMC.
