I have an 89 f150 with a 300ci motor and Today I had to extinguish a fire under the hood. My guess is the alternator, because the harnesses from it are all melted beyond repair, and above the alternator is a hose that was on fire. The alternator was just replaced about 4 or 5 months ago and I noticed a squeekingfrom the belt. What caused this if you know please inform me.
When you changed the altenator did you get a new plug end? Each time I get a new alternator they come with a new plug and a warning about a wiring problem
Unless you have done the upgrade, you have the infamous 2G alternator. Also known as the flaming Ford alternator. The plug in connection is the weak area on this model. Do a search for 3G alternator upgrade. Lots of info about this easy upgrade. Did it a few months ago on my 90 F150 with the 300. Got the 3G and the wiring harness from a U-Pull yard. Added cable ends and a fuse block. The mounting bracket has an extra set of holes that fits the 3G, and allows the same belt to work fine. Spent less than $50 total. I was concerned about the smaller pulley on the 3G making it run too slow to produce adequate power until I found out that it could produce more power at idle, than the 2G at hiway speeds. I had to rotate the back 1/2 of the case to move the wire connections away from the engine, and splice one wire into the existing harness to turn the alternator on and off. Good luck.
