My 300 has an inline fuel filter in the line from the pump to the carb as seen at bottom of the picture. Is the canister on top of the pump also a filter? Does it have to be changed now & then? Still trying to learn all the parts of this 300 motor. Thanks
Yes, there is supposed to be a filter in that cannister. That inline filter has been added in after the factory. Ford (Motorcraft) part number for it is C4AZ9365A (FG-1). It came with a new o-ring that seals the cannister. Those cannisters can be a PITA to unscrew. There used to be a special tool that would assist in this removal. It slipped over the end and grabbed those 3 dimples in the can. And a handle to turn it like a wrench. Found the below universal cannister removal tool online. It just might work. Is there a regular time period or mileage for a change? I only put 5,000 miles or less on my truck each year. This pump & canister was on the truck motor when I got it a few years ago. Fuel pressure is good at 4.5-5.0 #. Motor is running fine. Thanks for the help.

That's one of the cheapo glass mesh filters. Remove it, there is no benefit of it as the canister filter has a smaller micron rating. They are also failure prone when used on the pressure side.
2X gashog. But make sure there is a filter currently in that cannister. Me personally, I would buy a new cannister fuel filter kit (to get the o-ring and a fresh filter) and dump that in line one.
JEFFFAFA -- Don't know if the existing cannister has a filter inside but will remove the inline filter when I change out pump cannister/Filter. Two questions?
1- Do you know where I can purchase that 3 arm filter remover?
2- I want to buy a complete kit (outer cannister, o ring, inner filter). Is there a part # for this full kit that I can use at my Ford Dealer? or at NAPA or on line Ebay?
The whole kit is Airtex FL73 or Napa has the canister and filter separate. The original tool doesn't exist new and the 3 print tools damage the caps. Use a rubber strap wrench and don't crank it down super tight.
Actually I found that the part number I posted above had been replaced. To C4AZ9365B (FG-1A). Try your local dealer with that number. If there is a local Motorcraft Warehouse Distributor your dealer can pull one from there.
