Question Overdrive, what's the point?

Hey there,

I have a ‘88 Bronco II with 2.9L engine and manual transmission. Had it since it was new. I put 405 thousand kilometres on it. Till this very day I don’t see the point of the overdrive gear. The truck has almost no power in it and it sucks more gas in that gear than in the fourth. Even at speeds over 120 km/h. Did any one noticed that too?

My 90 B2 would be useless WITHOUT overdrive. I drive 110 miles pretty much 5 days a week, and a little more than half of that is at 75 mph on the interstate. It's no wheelstander, but my 2.9 does just fine with 185k miles on it. Gets about 20 mpg running 75 mph in OD. If I run it closer to 65 mph, I'll get about 23 mpg.

You wouldn't happen to be running 31" tires with 3.45 gears, would you?

where would i be without my overdrive. I do alot of driving myself, not as much on interstate, but just around.... most my roads are 45 mph, i run O/D and easy on the gas pedal, and i save sooo much gas its not even funny. I get around 250 miles per tank on regular roads, and 300 per tank on the freeway. Thing cruises great at 65-70. Cruises even nicer at about 90, but theres only one section of freeway where i get away with that for about 30 miles. the 2.9 is a small v6. granted. but when put up against my 4.0 engines, i like it more. It has a more defined power curve. If you bring the RPMs up to around 4 grand, theres ALOT of power there for the poor lil pickup. The more defined power curve makes it nicer for shifting. Its faster than our 4.0L

Yeah, it does have good power around 4k RPMs, but I have an A4LD and it doesn't like to get that high half the time or accelerate to that point very well, unfortunately...

my 89 must have been blessed .. i fill'd up in harrisburg pa and drive beyond pittsburg pa to where my g/f lives and my gas gauge stayed right around the 3/4 full mark .. when i drive out there its like i almost get 450 - 500 a tank .. its hard to belive . i get out here and put about 17 bucks in @1.75 a gal. apx 10 gallons ,and its about a 260 mile trip . and i had 33's with 3.73 gears , 4 speed with OD i figured about 25+mpg .. i did have a ported/polished upper and lower and a K-N cone filter and converted to a singel cat with a thrush turbo mulfler not the cheery bomb , that may have helped me out a good bit . they do have like a 23 gallon tank and the fuel gauge does act funny at times but , OD is a fave in my book . if i diddent want to do new things with my 89 i would have kept the 2.9 how it was.

overdrive is a great thing if it work right. I have a '88 with an A4LD and lately it wants to keep popping in and out at speed only stays in if I continue accelerating slightly. but doing that eventualy gets you a sitation. anyone know what might be makeing it do this. Cheers, Boss429

Hummm.. I am not complaining, I was just wondering if others noticed the same thing as mine. Obviously you like your overdrive. As to the _rich_ question. I am not running 31 inch tires. But I belive it has 3.45 gear in it.

im running 31' tires a stock gears and my O/D still works great. I get about 20 mpg. Which is pretty good for the tire size.
