6.8 EGT Install?

I had an Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) gauge in my 1978 VW Rabbit I used race in the mid 90s. That was the only way we could tune the engine, in those days.
Since I have a tune, headers and free flowing muffler, I am thinking about getting a dual EGT, one for each bank. Just to make sure I’m not running too lean. Glowshift has a pretty cool dual digital display gauge.
Anybody do this?
Back in the day, we would drill the hole 1” from the head. I don’t know if that is still the standard.
Thanks.

If you are not doing custom tuning it is highly unlikely that you are running lean. Let's assume that you were running outside 13.7 stochiometry, what would you do about it? What is your baseline for an acceptable EGT, ie you may want a stock baseline without the mods.

Sorry about that. I forgot to mention I have three (3) different tunes by 5 Star. They sent me pre-packaged tunes so I don’t know what the final outcome is for my particular truck.
This type of tune is cookie cutter, not like the tune I got from Vengeance Racing for my Corvette where I have printout results from the dyno.

There's no value for what you're looking to do. the EFI system on your engine is far more sophisticated and adaptable than whatever a 78 VW had.

Thanks. I get what you’re saying is that the computer system will adjust to any fuel/air mixture too lean.
In that case, you just saved me some money.
Take care.

BTW, I also have a C5 Z06 I use for track days...almost 6 years, 55k miles racked up since I got it. Best missile for the money there is!

I agree, if anything just throw a fresh set of O2 sensors on it to ensure the best fuel trims.

If you are worried about your A/F mixture wouldn't installing a wideband O2 sensor be better than trying to use EGT to monitor it?
