I have a 1981 Ford F-250 that has a 400 in it and I have a starter relay going to the starter solenoid connected to the starter. And when I was buying a new starter it came up with a starter that had no solenoid but looked nothing like the original starter but now this new starter is not working for me.
The original starter had no solenoid. You should have one very large wire running from the solenoid on the fender to the new starter with no solenoid on the starter. Do you still have the small wiring going to the solenoid on the fender? The red with blue strip wire is what triggers the solenoid on the fender to activate.
“The original starter had no solenoid.” I’m quite sure the original starter had a solenoid and I believe the engine in the truck is from the late 70s it was swapped from the 300.
I looked up a 1977 f150 with a 400 engine. Starter had no solenoid on it.
I looked up a 1977 LTD with a 400 engine. Starter had no solenoid on it.
Looked up a 1979 f150, same situation.
1975 LTD, same
Went all the way back to 1971. That seems to be when they started using the 400 engine in at least the LTD and it has the starter with no solenoid. They didn't start using the 400 in the trucks till about the mid 70's it seems. I am not saying Ford never used a starter with a solenoid on it, but it was not very often. The majority of the older Fords used the same design with no solenoid on the starter. People do use aftermarket starters with solenoids. And Ford did start using starter mounted solenoids in the 90's I believe.
The starter I have seen looks like it’s only got one point for a wire to hook up but the starter with a solenoid that was on the truck hooked up with 2. And the starter that was in the truck worked a couple times before it gave out.
Not that exactly but all I’m saying is when I bought the truck it started up it stopped starting so I changed the starter and that didn’t work so I looked at it and it has a relay going to the solenoid on the starter and thought that was weird when they showed me the starters that came up
This is what I have it would make sense maybe for the high torque starter the person who found me the same starter said it was off a 1975 460
You do not have enough wires on the solenoid. Where does that big fat black wire go ? To the battery +? If it does, you need to go buy another big fat wire and hook it to the other large post and run it down to the starter.
