Ok guys im having this issue with my transmission when you put it in drive and go the tranny shifts hard into 1st gear it feels almost as if someone is pushing you from behind and after that 2nd 3rd and 4th are fine but it also slams into gear when you put it in reverse and sometimes in drive, I've recently put in a new torque converter and made sure the fluid levels are perfect anybody got any idea on whats going on? I was thinking the solenoid shift pack or that the transmission is about to go out and needs replaced or rebuilt
Before spending a bunch of money you should read the codes. It might be something cheap and simple. If I knew what your truck was I could tell you how to read the codes.
Its a 95 f150 2wd with the 5.8 as.of right now it isnt throwing any codes but also I know those older vehicles didn't always flash a check engine light for everything like the way the newer vehicles are today but yes I will do that I know I can do it with a paper clip and count the blinks am a right?
Any change from how it shifts compared to the old torque converter?
Is that a brand new or rebuilt torque converter, or a used/new to you torque converter?
How does the fluid look and smell?
Your issues are more than likely internal to the transmission, probably needs to come apart and inspected.
Or, does your truck have a trac-loc/limited slip rear end?
My truck slams into first and reverse, cause is worn out clutch pack in rear end.
It echo's through the drive shaft, a distinct rear end sound, and I did question the transmission as the issue.
The rear end is actually fine I replaced all bearings and seals about 9 months ago but im going to diagnose it first old school way with a paper clip and counting the blinks to see if I'm throwing any codes
OP -- I've had plenty of these and quite a few on the bench / torn down -- they can work, do have their share of problems (early versions are the worst mess known to modern man), but can serve you well with upgrades (Ford's done a ton over the variants and frankly Ford's transmissions are in many ways best in class when compared to the REAL CHIT from other manufacturers like 518s, 47REs, 48REs from Mopar as examples).
Try taking a peek at your Transmission Range Sensor, or Neutral safety switch (same thing). My trans was acting very weird and that was the culprit.
I had the same exact problem, 1-2 shift would slam hard as could be, and I replaced the range selector on the side of the transmission.. no hard shifts since then
