t18 or t19

Looking at a 2wd f250 with a 4spd , don't know if its a t-18 or t-19 or an np435. I haven't seen truck, i am familiar with the np 435 but not the others, which is better or what problems should i look for. Are the other two geared with that super low first gear?

Doesn't the T19 have a synchronized first gear or something? I know there's some feature it has, which the other two don't. Or maybe it's a PTO on either side of the transmission.

NP435 = aluminum top cover w/8 bolts
T-18 = cast iron top cover w/6 bolts

Warranty Plate TRANS code: A = NP435 (N-1965 only) / F = Warner T-18 / P = F350 Warner T-19.
Warner shift lever retainer cap (8MTH-7220) threads on/off.
NP435 shift lever retainer cap (B8T-7220-D) has two notches, is retained to shift tower by two pins.

To remove this cap, it must be pressed down and held downwhile turning it counter clockwise to remove it. Its spring loaded and twists into place, we removed one and it was a 2 person job. Put the trans into 2nd, 4th, or reverse, then one person holds the cap and applies pressure, twisting in a counter clockwise direction. The other person hits it from the top with a hammer to get the cap to go in below the two clips that hold it in. People unaware use pliers or channel locks to remove it, which tears out the pins.

Originally NP435: Reverse-down towards the seat while Warner T-18: Reverse-up towards the dash.
The reverse shift pattern was changed circa 1973, but I can't recall for which of these 4 speeds. ( I believe it the NP435)
Note:There's another 4 speed: RUG SR-OD Single Rail 4 Speed Overdrive introduced in 1978 F100/150 300/302, TRANS code B

T18 casting # 13-01 and T19 #13-09. 66-78 T18 reverse is to the right and up. 79 and later reverse was right and down. NP435 reverse is right and down. According to this page.

To reinforce 77&79F250's post, The T19 was only available in F350's for for our trucks and was available in other models in approximately 1984--don't quote me on the year. A T19 can be identified by having a PTO cover plate on both sides of the transmission case, the T18 only has one PTO cover plate. Yes, the T19 is the only transmission of the three with a synchronized 1st gear and was available in 3 different 1st gear ratios.

For the T18, there is a lot of inaccurate information about the reverse right & up versus right & down and unfortunately some of it is found on prominent websites. For example, I have an original 1976 F100, 302 with a T18 4-speed. Reverse is right & down. I also believe I have seen right & down in pre-1973 trucks but unfortunately can't validate that so I won't even try to confirm that statement. I would like to hear from other members with original T18 transmissions in 1967-1973 trucks as to the location of the reverse gear in the shift pattern. It's a good opportunity for me to start a separate thread on this.

I am actually preparing to build a 1976 F150 with a 4.02:1 1st gear ratio T19 transmission, 2.75:1 9 inch differential and either a 390-4V or 460 (I have both engines but haven't decided which to use). I call it "the truck Ford should have built" as this power train combination was not available--should be a fun truck to drive with 4 useable gears and slightly less than horrible gas mileage.

Mike is a very helpful and knowledgeable FTE member and he has a 79 F150 4wd with a T-18.
