I know this gives away my youth, but what is the diff between a T-18 and a NP435. I realize both are heavy-duty with granny 1st gears, and are reatively the same size...what else? Thanks for the info.
Some one correct me if I'm wrong. If memory serves me, the T-18 is made by Borg-Warner and the NP435 is a New Process. Basically the same tranny made by two different companies. Both good trannys.
Well, there's a bit more difference than that, the NP 435 has a lower first gear, and an aluminum top cover, while the T-18 is all iron. I think you'd refer to the T18 as heavy duty, while the 435 would be called severe duty. Eithier one makes a good light truck tranny, so long as you don't want o/d, the NP 435 is popular with the off-road crowd due to it's lower first gear, so they are a little more pricey.

I hadn't realized these two had a different ratio for first gear. I always thought that the difference was that the T-18 lacked a syncronized first gear. Do you have the data on the ratios?

The T-18 has a non-syncro low of 6.32:1, second is 3.09:1, 3rd is 1.69:1, and fourth is 1:1. The T-19 has a syncronized low of 5.11:1, second is 3.03:1, 3rd is 1.79:1, and fourth is 1:1. These two are outwardly identical, and the case legnth is 11.875". The NP 435 has a non-syncronized 6.69:1 low, 2nd is 3.34:1, 3rd is 1.66:1, and 4th is 1:1. The case legnth is 10.875", and the aluminum top cover makes it fairly easy to identify.
