6.0 Heater problem

So living in Iowa, the heater tends to be the most valuable part of any vehicle in the winter time. It seems my 6.0 runs too cold when it’s under 30° Outside. For example last night it was about 15° when I came home from work, I let the truck high idle for 10 minutes before I drove it and it took another 20 minutes of highway driving before the heat kicked on. Then after that it would blow cold or lukewarm if I didn’t keep my foot in it. Also doesn’t heat worth a darn at idle. What can be done about this/what’s my issue? Would blocking the rad with cardboard do the trick? Or do y’all think I have a thermostat issue?

any help is appreciated

Do you have a scanner to monitor coolant temps?

It should get up to 192 with an OEM thermostat and stay there not dip below. If it doesnt reach 192 you have a thermostat issue or if you have the 7.3 fan clutch the fan is probably causing the engine to not get "up to temp". A winter front would help this issue.

Blocked/clogged heater core lines
Failing heater core - look for coolant under the passenger footwell.

I've also heard of a HG issue causing this as the combustion gases get "trapped" at the highest point which I believe would either be the degas bottle or the heater core.

Also if you have the heater core "valve" above the GPCM move it by hand and verify its not stuck in the closed position. It's the valve with the vacuum line going to it.

The vacuum should only be on to the valve in Max A/C.

Some other caused of low heater output.
Low coolant level.
Kinked supply return hose.
Thermostat not working correctly.
Blocked heater core.
Bad water pump.

I would go down this list in the order I made it.
Cost gets higher as you go from top to bottom.

Find out what is causing the problem and don't just throwing parts at the issue.
