Yikes! Warranty expired 6 weeks ago and naturally for the last 4 weeks I'm having heater problems.
2007 6.0 PSDL (leaker!)
Here's what's happening: Truck warms up fine and shows regular temp on the gauge. Water hose feels hot like it should. Coolant is at normal operating level. Temperature Rotary dial works it's entire range and feels normal.
At first the heater would work and blow hot air, then at times it wouldn't and only cold air would come out. Over a couple weeks it became more often cold then warm until this week when all I get is cold air. This is regardless of settings. No warm air at all anymore.
I have no idea how long this could have been going on since I almost never use the heater. Only lately with the cold fronts going through have I experienced this problem. Reason I need it fixed soon is in 2 weeks I'm thinking of taking a vacation to Utah where I will really need the heater!
The engine thermostat? The engine seems to heat up just fine and the top hose is plenty hot. Is there another thermostat somewhere for the heater unit? Jim.
It is the engine thermostat. They will get stuck open/closed/or partially open. It sounds like your was getting stuck and then moving to allow the heater to work sometimes. Since it isn't working at all now, it has probably gotten stuck for good now. It is a very easy and cheap fix.
Ok thanks for that idea, I'll double check the hoses and take a look at how hard it is to replace the thermostat. I'm do for my 30,000 mile service which seems to include a drain and flush of the coolant system. Might be worth a couple extra bucks to have them replace the thermostat while they are working on it. That might even be included in my engine warranty? Would be nice if it is!
Question, is there a blend door in the heating system like the older cars had? I'm wondering if that could be stuck? Just wondering if you knew. Thanks, Jim.
From what Ive been told due to my experiance with mine. Your vacumme pump works two things hubs and where the heat goes. If your pump goes then you get defrost, the defalt setting. If you have a leak you may only lose the auto hubs. I doubt its a blend door also all the later model thermostats as far as I know or have heard of ONLY stick open,(if they fail and stick shut you would overheat) thus at 180deg moter not too damn warm. I assume the diesel is simmiliar but I havent had the issue yet so am not certian. Stay tuned youll get an answer on here.
foul1: I'm thinking that the vac pump must be ok since I can cycle through all the settings and they all work. I don't have auto hubs so can't check with those but if all the selections work then the vacuum must be working right? Hmmmmmmm...........

When you say cycle: Does it cycle from defrost, floor, ect?
I had my Vac pump stop working , all I was getting was cold defrost.
What I did was un-plug the wire, re-connect it back to the pump, presto back to life and has been working ever since.
hangon2me: When I move the selector on the dash it will move the vents from defrost to floor to vent, AC on and off etc. From each setting all I get now is cold air, colder of course when in the AC modes. The fan also goes through all it's speeds and blows the air as it should. Sorry to be vague, hope this helps.
Can you tell me where the plug that you reset was located? I know of one electrical plug behind the glove box, is that the one I should try to unplug and reconnect? Jim.
Those symptoms are often a coolant pump on the 6.0. I would probably change the thermostat first, because it's easy and cheap, but in the end it is likely to be the pump.

Hi Bill! Long time! Thanks for the info, if it's that bad then I hope it's covered under the extended warranty for the 6.0. That can't be cheap to pay for! Well I'll do the simple checks tonight if I get home in time and hope I get lucky. Jim.
Good news - the water pump is covered, with a $100 deductible for 5 years/100k miles.
Whew!!!!!! Ok I'm starting to breathe again! lol! I sure it's not that bad, don't think I would be to happy without my truck for the time it would take for them to replace that. But we'll see what this turns out to be. Thanks for the input Bill! Jim.
It could be the valve that diverts coolant to the heater core. Can you check to see if it is working (some folks have even found the vacuum line disconnected).
Bill -
I sure hope it isn't the water pump. I just don't see too many failures on the later models - at least not talked about on these boards much.
