I posted over in towing, but no reply's so I figured I would ask here. I hooked up the controller, but got nothing. Does it require a trailer to be plugged in? I am gonna check fuses too. Thanks:
I just purchased an '01 Excursion and am swapping over my brake controller. I posted some pics below for referance, but it appears that it is already wired and that the previous owner cut the wires and removed their controller. The picture of the wires are from under the dash. I am curious if anyone has an idea on the white wire (actually white with a black stripe) with the black tape on the end? I am thinking it has nothing to do with the controller and is something else.
Another question. I am going to be updating my controller (its pretty old). Any recommendations?
In my search I cam across the Curt Echo Smart Wireless Brake Controller. Not sure how I feel about it, but it looks interesting.
Stinks that they just cut the wires. There should be an actual factory plug under the dash, just under the lower dash just over towards the drivers side from center. Should be a gray plug. Most if not all newer brake controllers will have a wire harness that you could wire direct included in the box. If you have the factory 7 pin connector, you should have the factory under dash connector.
I had a Tekonsha P3 and really liked it (and it worked very well), but then I saw the RedArc controller, which I love as well. And, since I went manual hubs and transfer case, I was able to remove the 4WD switch from the middle dash and put it in there. Still not completely finished with how it looks, but I'll get there. Spring project. etrailer.com is probably the best source and price, but I find that their shipping is not necessarily on the speedy side. If you can find it on Amazon you'd probably get it much faster.
Are those cut wires from the brake controller grey plug or are they the customer convenience wires that are pre-run through the firewall for adding accessories?
Look at the picture in post #16 in this thread and recheck that you don't have the factory grey plug under the dash up by the metal brace just to the left of behind the radio. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-question.html
And I use a Tekonsha P3 also, very nice brake controller.
Thanks. I found the grey plug under the dash by the radio. Just had to run to the store to get an adapter to plug in to it. I will get it hooked up and hope for the best.
I know my brake controller doesn't do anything without a trailer with brakes plugged in or an appropriately placed circuit simulating the load when the brakes are pressed.

I second EXSwap's statement. I have the Tekonsha P3 and their wire harness. It's plug and play. So easy to use and the green display matches our dash lighting. Love it!

I was checking them out. The one with the Ford adapter cable is sitting in my Amazon cart right now. Gonna test drive this weekend with my ancient one to see how it does. Gotta test it out along with the stock mirrors to see if they need replaced prior to the maiden voyage in a week.
Thanks. I have this sitting on my Amazon lit right now. Probably pull the trigger after the Holidays........kinda hoping it ends up under the tree next week and I dont have to buy it.
