I just got my Prodigy brake controller and was getting ready to install it when I ran into what I think is a simple problem but me and electrical don't mix well. The previous owner must have had a brake controller because there are two holes in the dash below the cubby hole where I was planning to mount mine. I fished around under the dash a found the ends of the factory wiring bundle and pulled them down. Wrapped around them is a white tag from FORD that labels the wires. The wires look exactly like those that came with the pigtail wire with the Prodigy controller....Except the vehicles bundle has a brown wire labeled "illumination".
What do with/need this "illumination" wire for? Do I leave it out or what?? Please help. I'm trying to attach photos as well.
Look further up under the radio and see if there is another plug. If so, unplug the bundle in the pics and plug in the appropriate harness for the new controller.
Guessing illumination may be just for the controller itself, but that's just a guess.
you most likely wont use the illumination wire with the prodigy. my prodigy to ford harness didn't even have that wire on it. just tape it off to keep it from shorting out to something...
and like exxwhy said, follow those wires up to the plug. those wires you sent a pic of looks a lot like the harness that shipped in the glovebox for splicing into a harness included with the brake controller. You should be able to unplug that harness and plug in a premade prodigy to ford harness into its place, so no splicing
Thanks guys. You were right that was the end of what must been the old devices harness not the vehicle side. I traced it back to the vehicle plug and removed the previous owners left over garbage. I'm ordering a new adapter to make my install as clean as possible. Thank you for the prompt reply.
