Update on king pin situation. I took my spindles off and was able to get the old bushings out. That was the easy part. I started asking who did king pins in my area. The shop several people recommended said they had not done them in at least 15 years and no longer had the tools. They gave me another shops name and who to talk to. I called that shop and the person who answered had no idea what I was talking about. He said he would have to ask John, I said that is the name I was given. He said he didn't have time. I didn't ask for immediate service. I was just trying to find someone who knew how to do it. He recommended FleetPride. I stopped in there instead of calling. Their mechanic used to have a 50 ford truck. He knew what I needed and called the next day saying they were done and ready to pick up. I am very impresssed with their service and the price seemed reasonable too. I had even called my local tractor dealer to see if they could do it, still waiting for a return call.
I just went through the process on a 38 Ford axle that I'm using in my Model T project. I got the old king pins out without much issue, drove the old bushings out without any issues, drove the new bushings in with no issues. Then hit a stumbling block with getting them reamed out. After calling around to several of my hot rod buddies with no luck I finally was able to track down an old friend who had an adjustable king pin bushing reamer that I could borrow.
About an hours work and I was good to go!
I read an article several years ago about replacing the bushings with bearings. I ordered the kit, from Stainless Steel Brake Corporation is memory is correct. Installed the kit in my shop, no special tools needed as I remember, and they have served well for many years. In my 38 years of driving my "50", I had to replace the bushings a couple of times. If anyone else needs new bushings, you might check this out. If they still sell the kit, it was a good choice. Thanks Terry
