Question Crushed my tailgate

Long time lurker, first time posting. I purchased a 2012 F-250 6.7L Powerstroke a few months ago so we could go camping with a 5th wheel, and you probably see where this is going! One time while detaching from the 5th wheel I forgot to lower the tailgate and crunched it under the 5th wheel king pin. My question is where would you go to find a replacement tailgate? I am in South Carolina and would consider driving across state lines if it means getting a good deal.

I'm seeing listings online around $370+ for tailgates that I would have to get painted to match my truck's silver color. The online $370 tailgates come without a latch, camera, or Ford decal, though I could probably just poach the ones I have from my crushed tailgate because those items are still functional. I checked the marketplace here and didn't find a match.

Thank you!

Also check anywhere where they take beds off and put on utility bodies. Might check bone yards too, A head on crash and the beds in great shape. Your only limited to your internet speed.

Boneyard or truck accessories shop. Don't feel bad, my oldest backed into a light pole with the tailgate down. On the web I found a place that will paint to match a new aftermarket tailgate. After talking to a few body guys none suggested anything but a Ford gate, the fitment on the aftermarket stuff is hit or miss they said. My boneyard, there is only one, said $325 and they will search for the right color. That's the route I'll be taking after the holidays.
I backed my '12 into the neighbors fence (2 strand barb w/ 6" pig wire) right at the corner where the pipe has extra diagonals. Was shocked at the amount of damage done and I was barely moving. That's under insurance though so no worries.

you could also replace your OEM tailgate with one of the 5th wheel tailgates. My buddy put one on after doing what you did, wired the camera up to it and modified it a little and still rocks it. Plus, he can unhitch and pull out without worry.

This is what comprehensive insurance is for. I paid 50.00 for my new tailgate after it dropped on its own.

Brand new from Tasco Ford is $565. Yes you have to poach all the little parts. That just covers the main tailgate. The access panel is another $150
So $700 you'd have brand new tailgate that you still need to paint. So it's an easy $1000 repair.

Check with any of the wecking yards and places that part out trucks. You might find a deal

The last time I priced a used tailgate it was $150. If I asked for a RED tailgate, it was $500. Lesson learned. Get a price, then ask what color it is.
