Destroyed my tailgate

Well I was hooking up my 5th wheel toy hauler yesterday in the sand and after having a hard time getting back under it decided I was not lined up enough after closing the tailgate. I pulled forward and BAM, there goes the tailgate. I have seen this done many times but I never thought it would happen to me. I still cannot believe it.

The tailgate was in nice shape too. I hate replacing parts that do not need replacing as much as I hate destroying good parts. I feel better today though.

If anybody knows of a place to get a replacement tailgate, I would love to hear about it. Thanks.

I see new aftermarket ones on Ebay all the time for $85-$95 + $35 shipping.
I have not idea of what kind of quality they are, though.
I think dealership wants in excess of $500 for one, but that is just a guess based on a very faulty memory!

junk yards... find a truck with front end damage and yank it. Usually $50-100 for one in good shape.
Any tailgate from 87-97 will fit

What Brownie said ^^!! The ebay ones are flimsy as heck and will NOT hold up to any weight. Junkyards are the way to go.

BTW, the late 80's tailgates seem to be stronger than the smooth style mid 90's ones...

My bed is from a '89 so i'm probably going to get a late 80's tailgate to replace my bent up smooth one that doesn't even have a handle... haha

Thank you everyone. I will look into asap. What a waste of a perfectly good tailgate though.

That does hurt to do that to your own truck. I know a bunch of guys over the years that have done the same exact thing to their tailgates. Makes ya sick when you do that to your own vehicle.
I didn't do that but I did jacknife a trailer into the bed side when my foot slipped off the clutch one time. Man, I was just so furious with myself.....
So, I know the feeling.
