Wouldn't one think that removing a 5" Rough country lift and then installing ATS X code and modded C code springs, would improve positive caster? Caster with old springs were 3.9* left, 4* right. Atleast those are the numbers that the alignment shop gave me.
Thanks for the reply. I was hoping the new springs would give me about a degree more of positive caster and put me where I need to be but it seems that I may of lost some. New springs are great compared to the old and the feel of the truck is much better but still have the wandering. It's going to a different alignment shop in a day or two, hopefully they can dial it in. Just ticks me off that the last alignment shop who does tons of lifted trucks didn't bother to touch the caster. .
Most shop will not, heck many dhops are unaware they even can set caster on a dana 50/60 axle. If they do know Fords “specification is such a broad range from 1.5* to 5.5* that they just tell the customer it is in spec. Those shops moto is set the toe collect the dough, next
simple ask before you sign the estimate if they will set the caster at your preferred setting. If they say no go somewhere else.
Had I known before hand about putting these trucks on the high end of the spec on caster, I would of definitely asked for it. But again, you are absolutely right. They said caster was in spec, which technically it was. Live and learn. It's really my bad, I should of put the 2* axel shims in while I was doing the new springs. Needless to say I called around to a couple places we deal with and have an appointment next Monday to get it done. I told him where I wanted to be at, and that I wanted before and after measurements. No problem. I'll post up measurements after the work completed.
A good shop will set the left right split according to how you answer a few basic questions as the should know the local road construction, Do you daily highway commute, do you drive mostly country roads, that sort of thing to get an idea what type of roads you drive most, crowned roads take more caster split then say concrete freeways which are relatively flat.
Sorry guys, got really busy at work. I finally got the pig in the shop and have preliminary numbers. Gonna go with cam/caster bushings to hopefully put me where I need to be. I will post the final report after work is done.
Wow!! What a difference. This even helped tracking at low speeds too, 35-45mph in traffic, or when having to brake hard at a light. Straight as an arrow. Returns to center much better and steering is more responsive. Thank you
