I am looking into replacing my front springs due to the fact that they are not as perky as they once were. My question is does anyone know if there is a heavier front spring from Ford available and if so what code it would be.
THanks Stewart, I want to do the spring swap on the X, but the pickup has a priority right now. I'm going to use some X code springs. Its amazing how clueless the parts guys at my dealer are. I think I'll just order them from direct ford parts.
There is a two-character spring code on the vehicle certification sticker on the lower doorpost behind the driver's door. The first character is the front spring code, and the second character is the rear spring code. A common spring code for a CrewCab 4x4 would be VB. The V means 5,200 pounds front springs, and the B usually means the rear springs on an F-350 SRW. However, some F-250s also have code B rear springs.
Any pickup can have any available front spring code - depending on options, and it doesn't matter whether F-250, F-350 SRW or F-350 DRW. Here are the springcodes for the front leaf springs on '99 thru '04 PSD 4x4 pickups:
T = 4,400 pounds @ground
U = 4,800
V = 5,200
W = 5,600 (rare on a pickup)
X = 6,000 (only with snow-plow pkg on a pickup)
Rear springcodes:
A = F-250 & Excursion (6,084 pounds @ground)
B = F-350 SRW (6,830 pounds @ground)
C = F-350 DRW (8,250 pounds @ground)
If you already have code B rear springs, then you already have the same rear springs that are on F-350 SRWs.
If you have Code U or V front springs, then you might like the code X front springs. In addition to giving you a little more weight capacity on the front end, they will give you a one to two inch lift of the front end.
If you wanted to really beef up the springs on your F-250, then put the code X front springs and the code C rear springs on it (they should bolt on). But be warmed it will then ride "like a truck". <?xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /><v:shapetype id=_x0000_t75 stroked="f" filled="f" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" oreferrelative="t" o:spt="75" coordsize="21600,21600"><v:stroke joinstyle="miter"></v:stroke><v:formulas><v:f eqn="if lineDrawn pixelLineWidth 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 1 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum 0 0 @1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @2 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @3 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @0 0 1"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @6 1 2"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelWidth"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @8 21600 0"></v:f><v:f eqn="prod @7 21600 pixelHeight"></v:f><v:f eqn="sum @10 21600 0"></v:f></v:formulas><vath o:connecttype="rect" gradientshapeok="t" o:extrusionok="f"></vath><?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o:lock aspectratio="t" v:ext="edit"></o:lock></v:shapetype><v:shape id=_x0000_i1025 style="WIDTH: 212.25pt; HEIGHT: 68.25pt" type="#_x0000_t75"><v:imagedata o:title=\"\" src="file:///COCUME~1BRANDO~1LOCALS~1Tempmsohtml1\01clip_imag e001.wmz"></v:imagedata></v:shape>
BTW, NEVER change leaf springs without replacing all the U bolts with brand new U bolts.
Thanks for that info. I've been wondering that for a long time. I just checked mine, it's a VB code. I'd really like a better ride, and rarely haul anything close to my trucks capacity. I'm thinking UA might be the way to go for me, and add some air bags for those cases when I am hauling a big load.

If you take your springs off, hang on to them. For us Excursion owners, a common upgrade we do (to cure the inherent wander problems we have) is to swap out the POS OEM springs Ford put on our rigs for F250/F350 springs. The most common springs being the V code and B code springs.
You can probably find someone fairly close to you, willing to drive to your location and pay you cash money for the springs.
It's always nice to have some mod money for your truck!

Yeah I hear ya Jeremy, I am one of the lucky guys who got a F250 with the VB code springs. I would like to respring the front with X springs, but then I think it will beat me to death as a daily driver.
