Alright guys here's my issue. Went to start my truck this morning, gave the gas pedal one tap to set the idle, started it, and realized it was definitely too high. So I tapped the gas pedal again to try and bring it down and it shot up even higher and stayed there. I recently dialed in my warm idle where I wanted it so I obviously must have adjusted this one too much. Will turning the cold screw CCW bring down my initial cold start idle? Or turning it clockwise? Stupid question but I have totally confused myself at this point. It is the 300 inline 6
Not sure what carb you have but normally you turn the screw in to raise the idle and back it off to lower it.
Its the Carter 1 barrel. I thought so too but that didn't seem to do it. Maybe I haven't backed it out enough but it almost seems like its not even engaging the fast idle cam.
Back up a little bit and first make sure of simple stuff, with the engine off, make sure the pedal linkage to the carburetor isn't binding. When the accelerator pedal is floored the carburetor butterflies should be perfectly vertical. Make sure it moves freely in both directions. Then maybe disconnect the linkage and make sure the butterfly itself moves freely without sticking or binding and hanging up on something.

Thanks for the input! I know its definitely because of my own adjusting last night. When I initially bought this truck a while back it would idle at about 1k when fully warmed up. I used the screw to bring that down and it was idling exactly where I wanted it. I think it is definitely possible I adjusted the cold speed screw too far in, so I will fully back that out so there is no contact and go from there. Nothing should be binding but a little WD40 should clear anything up.
How cold is "cold" where you are at? What kind of temps we talkin'?
What I'm getting at is if you were driving it yesterday and shut it down and there was some internal icing built up internal to the carb there can be some strangeness on startup too. That's some WAG there.

Oh in the grand scheme of things not cold at all. Low 40's. I think I just set the cold screw in too far when I was bringing the warm idle down last night, and tapping the accelerator kicked it up even higher. I guess its possible it got stuck because even as it was warming up it didn't kick down into lower RPM's, but im 99% sure its from me getting carried away last night trying to bring it down a little but not backing the other screw back out enough. I am going to fully back out the cold idle when I get home and see if that makes a difference.
Why did you even touch the fast idle screw when setting the normal idle screw down?
Because I'm an idiot. haha I was actually trying to lower the cold idle but couldn't get it to work, and when I backed the screw in I went a little far. But after getting home from work yesterday and being able to dive into it, The choke is so far out of adjustment that when I set it with tapping the pedal, it completely skips over all the gears, hence the very high idle. And since I haven't touched that before, I am giving myself a pass. So for now I have just backed the screw out to the point it isn't engaged and problem solved. I only have to feather the gas for 10-15 seconds then she starts idling on her own.
