Hey everyone, got a Ford Excursion 2001 5.4 gas with what appears to be a bad mechanical diode (known issue with the 4r100), essentially delay shifts all gears but specifically 1-2 wont go unless let off gas then harsh, flashing OD light when this occurs but code doesn't come up in database when tranny scanner hooked up and does disappear on its own while driving, pink fluid as well no large shavings found in it when changing filter and adding cooler...however if it is what I think it is it may not have much time left before complete failure. I have an e4od tranny sitting around from an older 2WD f350 gas, they look identifical except for the 4r100 has 3 sensors on the top, I think these are speed sensors....has anyone had luck swapping an older tranny into a newer truck like this?
The transmissions don't interchange. Start by looking at the bellhousing pattern....
Good point just noticed now my bad
On a positive note my build date on the 4r100 is BD-2E29
This means it might have already been swapped before as the truck is 2001, since it was made in 2002 and the mechanical diode should be absent as that was in the 2000-2001 trannys, I may be dealing with solenoid/electrical issue or it could be the clutches, because the issue is intermittent and occuring at all temperates I may need to troubleshoot electrical first, all fuses are definitely good truck has 180,000 miles, besides the overdrive light code im not throwing any check engine codes

The mechanical diode will only affect the 1-2 shift. If other shifts are late there is something else going on.
And this trans shouldn't have a mechanical diode. The mechanical diode was only in the diesel version of the trans, but over the years I have heard of two gas trucks that did have mechanical diodes. It is possible that this is number three, but it isn't likely.

Then you need something better to read the codes. I suggest Forscan.

It won't work. The missing sensors are going to set codes, so you will have a flashing OD OFF light and bad shifts.
If you change the transmission without knowing the codes there is a very good chance that the new trans will do exactly what the current trans is doing.

Is mine one? The one I just rebuilt in my V10 Ex did have the diode.
When the mechanical diode debacle was discovered a couple thousand trucks had been built, but allegedly none had been shipped yet. We were told by the manufacturing people that all of the gas trucks had the transmission replaced and none were shipped with the mechanical diode. I have since learned that this was not 100% correct.

Either way, I was fortunate enough to get 220k out of it. And the diode didn't fail in mine. No way I'd put it back in, though, knowing what I know about the problem.
Thank you for replies all, I am going to try forscan today try and get some exact codes, my tranny does have 181000 miles but when I got the truck fluid was pink some shaving on magnet (changed filter added aftermarket cooler bypass factory one) and trans always runs at normal temps as well just takes a while to warm up with new cooler, I wonder what a bad solenoid pack would cause? I figured it would throw a more specific code and cause complete loss of some gears but I could be wrong, one thing I noticed today is it always cant shift 1-2 at WOT until you let off gas to 3-4K rpm with or without the flashing OD light. Once the light is flashing that happens plus delayed hard 2-3 and 3 to over drive.
There are two ways to fix this, One, you could throw parts at it until you get lucky and change the right one, or you run out of money. Two, you could get the specific codes and then we would know exactly where to look.
