Cool E4od/4r100

Ok, I went by the part store to inquire on the cost of a tranny filter for my 2003 F350. The man behind the conuter asked me the basic information; year, make, model, and engine.

The man behind the counter told me I needed a filter for a E40D transmission. I told him I have a 4R100 and he was like well it's not calling for that tranny . Now I'm not one to tell him he's full of crap cause now I'm confused. I was under the impression that E40D was used on 5.4 modular and the 4R100 was used on the 6.8 and diesels for that year. Am I right or is the man reading the parts screen right ?

The 4R100 was used on 5.4l, 6.8l and 7.3l in the 2003 model on Super Dutys.

The E4OD was in the "Heavy Duty" Ford F-Series trucks prior to 98'. I don't really know much about the E4OD.

Very true I had a 95 Ford with that tranny. It just threw me for for a loop when the guy told me that.

Thanks again

The E4OD and the 4R100 are the same transmission

It changed names somewhere. I always thought it was the difference between the "regular" tranny and the electronic one, but the E4OD was also electronic.

Same thing, different year.

I'm not surprised the parts books say "E4OD" on a filter.

Although, be careful. I think there might be a "deep pan" or "shallow pan" filter/strainer. Just make sure the new one looks just like the old one

In '98-'99 Ford made several upgrades to the E4OD. The internals were stronger to live behind the higher power diesel that came with the '99 Superduty. They also changed the case to mate to the modular engines (only on the gas versions,) and they added turbine speed and output speed sensors. This is where the name change happened.

Thanks Mark, there had to be SOME reason for it. And, it makes the name somewhat decipherable compared to the 4R70W and others.

But the filter/strainer is still the same, eh?

According to Rock Auto's catalog there are four different part numbers:

YC3Z7A098AA
YC3Z7A098BA
4C3Z7B155AA
F81Z7A098AB

YC3Z7A098AA is the same filter for the E40D and 4R100. Not sure why so many differnt filters but these where all listed for a 2003 6.8L V10.

Edit: On second glance YC3Z7A098AA and YC3Z7A098BA are both listed for the E40D and 4R100.

I don't want to hijack this thread but it seems as though I finnally found someone that knows the differences. My questions is I'm trying to figure out why my 03' 4R100 with 373's and 16" 285s turns a ton of rpms less then my dads 93 7.5L F350 2wd dually with 4.10's and of course a smaller tire. I know his will turn more rpms but the difference is like 1200 rpms when we are each in the same gear, so something doesn't make sense unless the trany gears are considerably different ratios which I thought the E4OD and the 4R100 used the same ratios???? The only thing I cann't remember for sure is his tire size but it seems to me that it's a 16" 245, but I could be wrong! any ideas?

I don't have an answer for that. I have the same set up as you but my tires are 265's and I never go pass 2300 rpm's unless im above 70mph or I standing on the gas.

Hope this helps you at least. My automatic compared to the numbers on the chart below are about 900rpm less... but it is stats for a manuel tranny in 4th with 1:1 gears @65mph.

Highway Driving, Good Fuel Economy
Daily Driver, Best Overall Performance
Most Power and Towing, Reduced Fuel Economy

This chart is based on 65 MPH and a gear ratio of 1:1, on a manual transmission in 4th gear. Please NOTE: If you have an automatic transmission your RPM will higher due to slippage in the transmission and the torque converter. With an overdrive transmission your RPM in overdrive will be 15% to 30% less than indicated.

Gear Ratio
.......2.35 2.73 2.94 3.07 3.21 3.31 3.42....3.55 3.73 3.91 4.11 4.27 4.56... 4.88 5.13 5.29 ..5.38 5.71 6.17 7.17
