I have a 77 F150 4x4. It has a freshly rebuilt 460 1979 block. I got a manual transmission bolted to it. I just found an ad in the paper for a ford transmission, C6, auto, big block, 4x4, "works great" $150. I called and this is what I found out. It's a 1984 C6 out of a 4x4 and has a 208 transfer case bolted to it. He said that he'd take $150 for just the transmission or $275 for the whole thing(transmission and transfer case). He said if I don't want the transfer case then I would need to buy an adapter plate to mount the transmission to my transfer case. He is also offering the adapter plate for another $50. He said he knows the transmission works because he drove the truck home before taking it out.
I've been planning on converting my truck to automatic eventually. I had wanted to wait till I got some other things done but this seems like a deal too good to pass up. Am I right or wrong? And does anyone see a problem with bolting that transmission onto my 460 or truck?
I need to know soon, I told him I'd call him back tomorrow.
I think all c-6's were the same basic case, just different adapters and output shafts between some models. Just be sure and get all the stuff that goes with it, The adapter for your NP 205 case will be required as will the kickdown rod and any shift linkage you can talk him out of. I think it would be a good deal. If it isn't you won't pay any more or less than that for a rebuildable core from a junkyard, and you will definitely pay more than that for the adapter to the np205. The adapter to the np208 won't work for the 205 it is way different.
