I gave up trying years ago - I take forever to get to sleep, so I perfected relaxation exercises to allow me to refresh without much sleep. As a constant, I regulate my breathing, to a slow deep cycle, and I do thought exercises that remove stress. That way, I can lie in bed, thinking about things, and get rest. On average I get about 4 hours a day sleep, and 5 hours rest time. It has worked very well for the last 20 years.

I wake my wife up and say "were you sleeping?". That usually gets her pretty mad and she starts telling me how tired she is and how much she has to do every day, and ...
Next thing ya know the alarm is goin' off.
Watching TV helps sometimes, but not if you catch the beginning of a really good movie, or a "Junkyard Wars" episode you never saw. To be safe, DON'T watch TLC. That'll keep you up all night.
Also, and I don't mean to be crude, having "relations" works great. Not only relaxing, but puts a smile on your face as well.
If all else fails, do this:
Lie on your back and get as comfortable as possible. One by one, relax every muscle in your body. From your eyebrows down to your little toe. Imagine that you're physically "turning off" each and every muscle.
It's a relaxation technique I learned as a teen and works every time. If it doesn't, it will at least have killed some time.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Aug-02 AT 12:54 PM (EST)]I don't know whether to consider myself lucky not to have that problem, or overworked. Between my 11 hours at work, projects at home working on a new house and yard, my X, and 3 jet skis - I have no problems sleeping. I usually get around 4 to 5 hours a night which seems to work well for me. Every now and then I will crash and sleep for 8 or 9 hours.
And since we are coming up on our 1 year wedding anniversary, I still like to use the 'honeymoon' excuse for not sleeping.....
Jen: It is my understanding that it is a good idea to not stimulate the brain cells too much. However, I find that reading (I am an avid reader)can be very beneficial in that it tires the eyes. No TV, too much stimuli. Maybe the radio, as it can lull you into dreamland.
Definitely, no alcohol. It may put you to sleep, but it will wake you up with a vengence. The tylenol pm is a reasonable way, but it is artificial, and may only work temporarily.
I think the best remedy is to get up early in the day, put in a long day, say 16 hrs, and you should have trouble sleeping only on occasion. I find I sleep best when I am tired. I just turn the lights out and it only takes a few minutes to drift away.
