Alright, it is 2am and I have been trying to get to sleep, but can't! What do yall do when yall can't sleep? Watch tv? Surf the net? Go for a jog.....I'm runnin out of options here lately!!
I try to unwind before hitting the sack. A glass of wine, a snack and a little t.v. before bedtime helps. I also have a sleep machine. It makes different sounds like raining, waves hitting the beach, a few others. I got mine at Radio Shack. I work the night shift so I sleep in the afternoon. The machine blocks out unwanted noise like barking dogs, kids, t.v. A radio tuned to static will also work. Avoid bright light before bedtime. I also take Melotoin to help my sleep cycle. I do a little reading under soft light and when the book hits me in the face, I get up and turn out the light and I'm out for the count.
No alcohol after 6pm, no caffene after 12 noon, if all else fails take 2 Tylenol PM at least 8 hours before you must get up, give the Tylenol PM 1 hour to work, relax!
I have found at age 44 that I cannot drink soft drinks that contain caffene after 12noon if I expect to sleep that night, going to bed around 10pm.
I have also found that as I get older that I can't drink Beer any later than 5-6 pm, and not more than 2 at that, if I expect to sleep, again going to bed around 10pm.
I also find that I need time to wind down, as to not work on the truck late, take a shower then expect to go to bed & go right to sleep.
Hope all this helps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had the same problem saturday night after I got back from the Jewel show. (yes Jewel, sounds odd for a Green Day fan) It was like 2am before I went to sleep. It was rough saying I'm usally out by 10:00 to 10:30. If I get really desprite I take a chug of NyQuil. Not too often that stuff is nasty.
I usually do a twelve pack of Sam Adams Boston Lager and put on some music. I'm usually out by the third song. Not the healthiest way I know, but works for me and no problems getting going the next day.
Surf the net, listen to music, a hot shower will sometimes work. if all else fails a hard pull on the tequila bottle will put one in a nice sleepy mood.
Mine is a creative mind. I always imagine things as I look at new ideas or find new stuff I can do.
Sometimes my daydreams carry me off into dreams....
Sometimes I lay there all night until the alarm goes off at 4:30 AM.
I try to feel relaxed, and sometimes get up and get some milk or a snack.
I read books avidly - and have the collected C. S. Lewis Narnia adventures. Sometimes that brings me back to a childhood frame of mind where dreams come readily.
And sometimes nothing will do but to get HAMMERED, and pass out!
(bad idea, if it's on a sunday)
But the GYM is the best answer, or some kind of exercize.
The body will insist on sleep if it needs it to repair itself.
Incense and new age music only carry you so far - do something to earn your dreams and they will come to you, I guarantee it!
Avoid light. Sometimes I turn the brightness on the tv way down to nothing so i can hear the show but not see it when my eyes are closed. I always watch tv while i'm in bed going to sleep. I need something to listen to or my mind will just drift off on things i don't feel like thinking about. If you can't sleep, sometimes it's better not to just lie in bed. When that happens i get up and have a small snack and milk. Milk will help as well as a shower before bed. Soda shouldn't be taken 2-3 hours before sleep. Those are my tips.

My grandfather used to take a sleeping pill and a shot of liqour to fall asleep. *Kids DO NOT try this at home!* It's amazing he lived as long as he did, God rest his soul. He was a Ford man, though.
I don't even try to go to sleep until around midnight. If I can't fall asleep, I just thinks about my toys or something. I'm too stubborn to get out of bed and do anything else though. Usually I'm tired by the end of the day so I don't have any problem falling asleep.
I usually hit FTE right before I go to bed. I have a slight astigmatism that my contacts don't fix, so reading from a screen makes me tired. If after about 30-45 minutes of lying there (it takes me that long to fall asleep) I'm still wide awake, I grab one of 5 things. 1. My book of exhausts. This lists every engine for every vehicle, compacts to medium-duty trucks (F-700 and the like). 2. The latest issue of 4 Wheel & Offroad. 3. The latest issue of HotRod. 4. My old, well-read, barely holding together copy of possibly the 2nd greatest book ever written: Dune. 5. The greatest, most important book ever written, The Holy Bible.
If I still can't sleep, then it's gonna be a long day tomorrow.
