Television

I sit down to watch TV everyday and 3-7 hours disappear, I have to remind myself to get up to break the trance, this is the most TV I've had access to in my life and its only 60 channels. I start watching a show and flip to another channel to avoid commercials and I get sucked into the show I flipped to and I keep doing this and don't finish a show. But it doesn't matter, the sitcoms are so hollow you know how they will end, the "dramas" are actually trying to be soap operas in disguise, and the info shows(on Discovery, TLC, etc) have little segments so you watch a segment and then keep flipping. I'm trying to break my brainwashed self away from the "box" but everytime I'm out they drag me right back in(I know I'm quoting from a show or movie but too much flipping has diminished my ability to remember who). When I mention what I saw on the news the other day, I will remember the important information but forget by who or when and my friends think I am making stuff up!
I feel burnt out most of the time I watch TV, it saps my energy, makes me tired, but I can't fall asleep watching it, I have to read for a half hour before I turn the light out.
Shows that I follow right now(and I have cut back what I watch):
Monster Garage
American Chopper
Overhaulin'
Rides
Enterprise
The Daily Show: with Jon Stewart
Gilmore Girls
Stargate SG1
Star Trek(Kirk & Spock, no new stuff) in re-runs
North of Sixty in re-runs
Powerblock on Spike(Horsepower TV, Trucks, 4x4 something)
Dukes of Hazzard in re-runs
MXC: most extreme elimination challenge
Leno sometimes
Letterman sometimes
Mythbusters
Survivor
Apprentice
Contender
Starhunter
Dragonball & Z & GT
Yu-Gi-Oh!
Shameless
Paradise Falls
Holmes On Homes(best show on television!!!!!)
Pimp My Ride
Unique Whips
Tuner Performance
Chop Cut Rebuild
American Muscle Car
M*A*S*H in re-runs
American Hotrod
Back In....
Seventh Heaven
Ellen sometimes
Clean Sweep
and whatever Showcase or Bravo have on usually
and I have alot more "sometimes" shows that I won't list

If I know I can't make it home to see a show beforehand, I'll tape it, and it doesn't become so important once its on tape cause I'm wondering what I'll miss if I watch the tape, so I start flipping channels and find more shows I want to follow and then tape if I miss them!

I don't know if we are all being brainwashed or if all our lives are so pathetic that we have nothing better to do than watch other peoples lives on TV, instead of getting out there and volunteering in the community and getting to know the neighborhood or spending time with family, basically interacting with other lives instead of merely observing.

This has been a little therapeutic, I didn't think my list was that long......what am I missing on TV now?

Angel on right shoulder: Do something constructive
Red man holding pitch fork on left shoulder: Watch TV
Angel on right shoulder: coach soccer, help others
Red man holding pitch fork on left shoulder: Watch what Will says to Grace tonight
Angel on right shoulder: Walk your dog, meet people
Red man holding pitch fork on left shoulder: See who's dating who on E.R. tonight
BODY: TIRED, SLEEP....NOW, go for walk in morning to get cramp out of legs/butt

I dont have TV anymore. Used to have satellite for the Discovery/History/SciFi/ and the like mostly for the kids as they grew up. but Direct TV kept messing up the billing so bad, my husband refused to keep it. Have not had any for the past three years.

Have a friend who tapes any programs we would be interested in off his satellite.

Otherwise, I listen to the Radio instead. Or watch a rented movie or one from our library. Always been an avid reader since a youngster.

Otherwise, I work with my husband in the shop and late at night go online.

It is so easy to set yourself down in front of the TV and let your mind go "offline" as the flickering images pass before your eyes. So easy to find yourself go into "Fairy Time" as in the old stories of a wanderer finding themselves "guests under the hill". Come out only to find the few hours they spent were really days, months or years passed by in "real life".

Out of all the shows you listed, I watch Mythbusters and MXC. The so called 'reality' shows os Discovery and TLC are all the same to me. They were entertaining at first but have got boring real fast.
I watch the History, Discovery Times, National Geographic and PBS stations mostly.
I suppose it could be worse.....I could be sitting in front of this PC all day.

Television for the most part (my opinion) is mind numbing. It does put you in a trance and your brain stops functioning. Read a book, go for a walk, do something that requires thought. Its not called the boob tube for nothing.

I agree with these statements. I for one gave up T.V. almost a year ago. My productivity in life went through the roof. I used to find that I was always short on time and I would always say only if I had the time I would do (fill in the blank with anything), but now I have the time. Just those few hours add up quickly and make you a counterproductive individual. Just give it a try for a month by going cold turkey and you'll see what I mean.

I used to watch a lot of TV. I grew up in rural areas where, if we were lucky, we got one channel. When I was 12 we moved to Lake Tahoe and for the first time had access to cable. All of 12 channels! I would watch TV the thing first thing in the morning till I left for school, and then turn it on when I got home and sit mesmerized till 11 pm, when I would force myself to go to bed. Lived in a lot more places without cable since, and at one point I set up a TV and VCR in my shop in town so I could record the shows I wanted to watch, and then take them home where I got no reception at all to view them. Taught me to be a lot more selective of what I watched.

Now I have cable with 70 channels and HDTV, and a surround sound system...and I watch an hour or two a day. The TV almost never comes on before 7:30 PM, and often I'll leave it on but not watch it while I'm on the computer (usually on FTE!)

I only have a few shows that I don't like to miss:

Lost
Eyes
Survivor
ER
Mythbusters

Almost anything else I can take or leave. Four-sixty, you got it bad, boy. I recommend intensive therapy, and possibly surgery to detach the remote from your hand! There's just too much going on in the world to let life pass you by sitting in front of the box. You're supposed to control it, not let it control you. -TD

Your only saving grace is that if you do tape your shows no commercials.

PUT DOWN THE REMOTE AND BACK AWAY FROM THE T.V. lol

I watch little tv, I know, amazing for a college student. I actually try to do some homework now and then, when i'm not doing homework, i'm surfing the web, listening to music, working, or finding something destructive, i mean, constructive to do in my room, lol. The only shows i watch on TV, whenever i catch them on, sometimes i forget about them and wind up not watching are:
The daily show with John Stewart
South Park
Family Guy
Overhaulin'
Pimp My Ride
Rides(every now and then)
speed channel has something every now and then that i'm interested in
TRUCKS!!(whenever i remember it's on, lol)
The Simpsons
ESPN, almost anything on there

I probably spend a max of 1 hr watching tv a day, if that, sometimes i don't watch any, others i watch a few hours. I listen to music the rest of the time, usually around 2-3hrs of music, when you have 1800 songs on your computer to shuffle through, you're bound to find something to do.

Not too much TV anymore. A little here and there. PCs. . . that's another story.
I do watch when I can:
Survivor
Powerblock on Spike (Horsepower and Trucks!)
Overhaulin'. . . when I catch it.
Mail Call (R. Lee Ermy. 'nuff said.) Ooh-Rah!

Now, IF I could sit down and see M.A.S.H. re-runs (without commercials), I wouldn't move! I LOVED that show.
Those people made me think. . . made me laugh. . . .made me cry.
Best show of all time, except maybe Sky King.
Dang. . . geezin' again.

Yup, M*A*S*H* is my alltime #1 favorite show, followed by Cheers, the original Star Trek, and I Love Lucy. That redhead was a comic genius! -TD

I'm glad to hear that I am not the only sorry soul that still watches MASH. I my area they have 3 episodes a night and then start over when the series ends. If you want to truly damage your brain try Fox news (newspeak). Mind control 24/7.
