Ok, so I commented (bragged, whatever, lol) about installing a Mishimoto T-stat and my temps went to what I would call normal, 198 ECT - 204 EOT. 6 degrees delta, not too bad.
Driving the truck today ECT went to 170, EOT 198. EOT is consistent, 198 ish so that's good, I think. ECT would be at 170 then shoot up to 198 then back to 170. Last drive of about 15 miles ECT stayed at 170. wouldn't budge. I'm thinking one of two things, air still in the system or perhaps the temp sensor has gone south. I hate just throwing parts at something but I'm tempted to just get a new temp sensor (about $35) and see what happens. Unfortunately, the local options are not Motorcraft. I haven't checked the stealerships yet but will do that in the morning.
Anyone know of a "burping" procedure for this truck? What I have read indicates there isn't one due to the degas bottle arrangement.
A "burping procedure" would be too put the degas bottle lid on loosely, not sealed. Then drive it at temp for about 30 min. That should get most of or all the air out of the system.
I occasionally will quickly remove the degas cap when there is pressure on it to "burp" it (be careful, the coolant is hot, but it is a vapor space you are venting, so it is somewhat safer). Just do so with a thick towel over the cap. The sudden release of pressure will move internal gas bubbles around.
The stock TS has an orifice to "burb" any air from being trapped; I would think the Mit has one too since it seems to work occasionally. On initial thought, I'd think bad TS.
I had issues with my replacement Mishimoto 202 thermostat but the problem was it would only go to 192 F but it was consistent. Give them a call as I am sure they will replace it free of charge if it is bad. You could swap out the coolant sensor with the oil sensor and see if the problem follows the sensor as well.
Does your ECT go down to ambient when the truck sits for long periods? Then climbs back up to 170 once you get going? If so it's probably the T-stat.
Always important to make sure the vent hole on the T-stat is oriented correctly at the top so the air vents. On the stock T-stat you don't have any adjustment, it's built into the housing. Don't know about the mishimoto.
Thanks for the replies everyone. It'll be a while before I can check anything temperature wise now. I replaced the temp sensor and while I was warming it up for a test run injector #4 went south. It had been running a bit rough when cold, but this time it was running a lot rougher so I didn't want to get into a hydro lock situation. I had been getting contribution codes for quite a while now when the engine was cold, but after warming it up and clearing the code, it wouldn't set again with the engine up to temp.
I've already ordered a new injector. While waiting on the injector I have a laundry list of things to do.
Next time you see it drop to 170, pull over pop the hood. Wiggle the plug and harness on the temp sensor. I've had same thing happen and that is exactly what it was, a bad connection at the plug.
Doing some research it looks like lower pressures are better. I'm running 10 psi normally, I think it just needed a good burp. After hauling a load of green wood today at 70+mph on the interstate I got 13psi. Maybe head gaskets are in my future. Truck is running good, though. New turbo, alternator, even side glow plugs & harness, # 4 injector. No codes are setting. ECT/EOT delta ~ 5deg F.
