I have a 2016 250 lariat 6.7 and the 4x4 was acting up I went to switch it in to 4 high and it would say shifting to 4x4 the a wrench popped up and it said service 4x4 and wouldn't engage. Switched back to 2x4 wrench went away. Couple days later I tried it again and it went in like it's suppose to then about 30sec later wrench popped up and now I can't get it to come out of 4x4. I haven't really looked into it just trying to see if anyone has any suggestions on what I should check first. I'm no mechanic but I am mechanically inclined I guess they say. Really appreciate any help.🤘🏼
2 things happen when you move the switch from 2H to 4H. A vacuum pulse ( or pulses ) is sent to the front hubs to lock them and an electric motor shifts the transfer case from 2H to 4H.
Since the hub locking sequence has no feedback ( there isn't a sensor telling the truck if the hub is locked or unlocked) one could safely assume the wrench indicates that your transfer case isn't shifting into 4H.
The cause? It could be a fuse the wiring harness, a bad ground, the shift motor or even the transfer case.
I would start with the easiest, check the fuses.

I pulled the fuse and it was good when I put it back in the hubs disengaged so maybe it's the electric motor on the transfer case?
You are a tremendous help. I am glad you are here. I have been trying to solve this same problem and your comment about feedback from the hubs just kept me from going down the wrong rabbit hole.

My 2015 did the same thing. Diagnostic equipment said the was a short in the shift motor loom. The short was found next to the shift controller. Have someone run a test.
