HI guys, well I'm going to be buying ANOTHER Bronco. I found one, it is a 1991 XLT, it has the 5.0L engine, it's a one owner, belonged to an old man, it only has 64,000 original miles.
It has the dreaded push-button 4X4. He said he hasn't used the 4x4 in over 5 years.
When you push either one of the buttons (4x4 or Low range) nothing happens, the 4x4 light doesn't even come on.
I was just wondering what you guys think it might be. I have no experience with these electronic 4x4 systems. The truck is only going to cost me $1500, I just don't want to end up spending another $3000 just to repair the 4x4.
No I have not tried that. I really have not doen anything to the truck yet, because I haven't bought it. I just need soemone to help me figure out what the problem MIGHT be, before I buy it.
Also, like I said before, the buttons don't even light up when you push them, so can that be caused by the T-case motor not working?
If you push the 4x4 button, you should be able to hear it clicking behind the glove box. If it is clicking it is the motor on the TC. If no clicking it's probably the module.
your worst case scenario would be swapping in a manual tcase for $500 or so. My guess a new motor or module would probably do the trick though for a lot less.
The button will not light up until the x-case engages. Yes you should still hear clicking, 2 clicks a second apart every time you push the 4x4 button. If you get these clicks, bring a friend along and have them push the button while you tap the motor with a hammer (may take a couple attempts) if it engages the brushes are probably cruded up and would benefit from a re-build/good cleaning, if it doesn’t check the obvious, fuses, connections, direct wiring and such. If your not getting the clicks and everything checks out it’s probably a bad module.
one of my friends had that problem.. we made it down the trail on my farm but he couldnt make it back up so i had to go get my dad and he pulled him up the whoollee thing with our tractor. he later figured out that you have to be going to turn it on. im not sure if you guys know about this? it might not be for all but it sure was his problem.
it may require some turning off the gears for them to come into alignment to alow the engangement to take place. a remaned motor can be had for about 120 dollars, and is the most likely remedy. occasional use of the motor is reccomended, but most people let them sit entirely too long and they go bad from dissuse. low rang will do nothing if it is not in 4 wheel drive, so its no use even messing with that. the light will not come on untill after the transfer case is engages, as it is triggered by the sensor in the case that indicates its in 4 wheel, same as on a manual transfercase. the hammer test would probably work too, just like on a faulty solenoid. if it aint working .. kick it .. hehe, always a good theory. good luck with the truck, sounds like its worth buying for that price, shouldnt cost too much to fix it no matter what is wrong. I actually have a transfercase with manual linkage if your anywhere near new jersey, its my personal backup for when my motor goes bad, but if someoen were interested it might change my mind.
i got mine fixed now turned out, i needed to rebuild the shift controller motor and it was simplier than expected. percautions should be taken as i got the info from an explorer (dr bob fix).great info -----http://www.glue.umd.edu/~ singletn/web/pages/tcase.html
