4x4 trouble
I have a 94 EB 4x4 explorer, and i am having trouble with the 4wd system. It seems to NOT be engauging in hi or low range, Is there a way to test it? Will tire types and sizes affect the engauging of the 4wd system? Are the hubs a common problem? or is it that damn actuator i keep hearing about? Any help would be greatly appreicated.
Thanks!

look there for the "actuator"/"motor" testing and repair info.
.....
and here on how to check:

You can check to see if it's engaging by jacking up the entire vehicle off the ground. This is because all four wheels should want to rotate. Start it up and press the shift button. Get out and attempt to rotate the tires in the front. In theory the other three tires should rotate. If none of the tires rotate then it could be your hubs are not locking up. If the front two rotate, but the back ones don't the problem will most likely be in the in the xfer case. To isolate the problem further you'll have to see if your drive shaft to the front rotates.
I don't know about the tire size or type, but I'm sure that if you keep the sizes and types on the not too radical side they shouldn't present a problem.
I got rid of my Explorer, the transmission (a rebuild I suspect) started slipping even with it's regular maintenanace and I was always doing brake jobs it seemed like. To its credit the vehicle did have almost 160k on the odometer so it did it's job for five years and 70k miles
Hope this helps.
