Alternator trouble/upgrade

I'm trying to sort a 1993 F-250 4x4 with a 7.5 in it. This truck has 153000 miles on it and is in spectacular shape inside and out, other than the charging problem. This rig has a 2G alternator which is internally regulated and hard wired on the charge side and has a plug for the control side. So what I'm wondering is why I couldn't just order an alt. for a "95 it's 130 amp and has the same control side plug and a lug for the battery charge wire. from what i can tell from the pics I've seen it looks like i will have to modify the top bracket and rewire for the battery charge but what concerns me is the bottom mount and whether or not it's going to line up, so if anyone has done this or has any info please let me know.
Thank you, Brian W.

Hah this is good timing. I just picked up the same truck but it's a 1993 F350 7.5L and I have been looking into the same thing.

The main thing with the 3G alternator upgrade is making sure that the distance between the mounting holes (the ears) are the same as the OEM. There are several threads on here about such things but none of them are about our exact set up (at least not that i've seen).

This is the alternator that i ordered and am using for the upgrade. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...=3375291&jsn=3

You'll also want to add 150 amp mega fuse inline to the battery as well as ditch the factory wiring harness and rig up a new one (it's really simple)

Here is a good video on the subject

As long as you wire it correctly you should be in good shape. A lot of people remove the smog pump when they do this but I am not going to. I've heard it isn't worth it.

Hope this helps.

Dan

I did it to 92 460 awhile ago. Got a 96 460 3G and harness from JY truck. Only modification I had to make is to the light green / red stripe wire. Been awhile but seems all I had to do was seperate it from existing harness and splice to new 3G one.

That's all we had to do. JY parts swap made the job too easy, factory harness even has the inline fuse so no need to mess around with making ur own harness.
