alternator and battery problem

i checked the amps on the battery with the volt meter and it was pulling 5.5 amps with everything off
i disconnect the plug on the back of the alternator and it dropped to .3 amps
but the alternator charges the batteries well but it also drains them overnight.
does this still mean the alternator is bad?

Likely a bad (shorted) regulator that's allowing field current to flow all the time. Field current will allow the alternator to charge with the engine running. This is an unusual failure, but completely possible.

Yes, that means you have a bad alternator, but depending on the condition of it otherwise, the regulator can be replaced separately if you're handy with tools.

I'm surprised at the .3 amp discharge with the plug disconnected, however. That seems high. Did you pull that under-hood light bulb out when getting this reading?
