You are correct, Sir! I double-checked today before ordering my custom battery cables and discovered it WAS indeed the block heater...that scared me at first! Whew!

My starter cable is currently super beefy...I'm going to replace it regardless and continue my cable/electrical upgrade saga. Good on the outside does not mean good on the inside...without the sealed connections, lots of corrosion gets in! You should see the inside of my terminal cables at the battery...straight-up green and oxidized!

Here's a pic of the battery terminals I'm employing:

I'm going with new battery terminals and the new cables and NEW AGM batteries. One was free and the other a purchase. I love Summit Racing, their return/customer service is top-notch. Bad battery under the 3-year warranty? They ask to send them a pic of the testing receipt, and immediately shipped me a new battery!

Two new batteries now topping them off for install in the AM:

Here we go...

Those rubber terminal covers are a joke. If you fab something, I'd be very interested to see what you come up with...

You don’t need to go larger then 3/0 for the last leg to the starter, but 3/0 is not always available. If you go 3/0 batt to batt and to the starter, then 2/0 grounds are appropriate. Also if the positive is 4/0. And 4/0

The ideal layout IMO is to balance the positive and negative flow Asia done on all the OTR trucks and transit bus that I worked on for decades, the main positive from from drivers batt to pass batt to starter. The negative is the same diameter and goes pass batt to drivers batt to engine block. A cable goes to the frame for the rear lights and trailer. One 8ga or 10ga off the negative terminal to fender from each battery.

Laying the cables in that manner is the absolute best way to use both batteries where you can change them out independently of age. A weaker battery will not overwork the better.
