2009 F450 diesel. Every now and then the temp gauge will peg to the red in 1/2 a second. Truck goes into limp mode. No sign of overheating i.e. antifreeze on the ground or steam. No check engine light. If you turn off the vehicle and then start it again right away it will go back to a normal operating temperature. Truck does not throw any codes. If it happens and you continue driving within 5 miles of highway speed the temperature will return to a normal midrange. reading.
Fan clutch and front temperature sensor have been changed. On a trip of 400 miles this can happen 2 times or 20, no codes and turning off the vehicle and right back on brings it back to normal. The dealership says it is the oil cooler, located under the twin turbos and will cost a fair amount of money to replace. No reasonable explanation as to no codes being thrown or why it resets so easy. Anyone out there experience this problem? Any solutions?
It's not your oil cooler. If you can restart and drive away and not do it again cooler is not the problem the oil doesn't cool down the quick. Dealer just doesn't know what the problem is. You need to download Forscan to you phone, tablet or laptop get a compatible OBD-II adapter to see what you engine is actually doing. As alloro posted it maybe a chaffed wire shorting to ground. Also, the temperature sensor is just a switch that's why the gauge suddenly jumps to high temperature. If it was a true variable temperature sensor the gauge would rise slow as the coolant got hotter. https://forscan.org/home.html

The front sensor was replaced as well as the fan clutch.
When it happens it will reset as soon as you restart the truck. It may happen again in 10 minute or less or you may go a 100 miles before it happens again. According to the Ford Technician the difference between the Oil cooler and the rest of the engine is approximately 60 degrees. It should be a difference of no more then 15 degrees.
Could it be voltage flucuations within the computer or the system?

I have the same exact problem with my 2010 F-250 Usually always happens while towing up hill I can stop and at a increased idle for a couple minutes the gauge goes back to normal just as quick as it went to hot Im still searching for a solution also
