Overheating Issues
Slowly over time I am losing engine coolant. No bubbles or pressure in degas tank, no white smoke, etc.
Was driving on the freeway @ 60mph the other day, and Transmission Temp gauge INSTANTLY jumped from normal to pegged hot. It would then instantly drop back to normal like you disconnected the electrical supply, then back to hot. To me, it was acting like it was low on fluid & the gauge sensor was wet with fluid one moment and "dry" the next. Then TOW HAUL light started flashing. After driving about 20 miles to get home, I checked fluid level and it registered full. Parked it.
Drove it cold the next morning, and after about 10 minutes driving less than 30mph (before engine temp gauge moved) transmission gauge started the same thing.
Radiator fan is spinning...but I could not hear it roaring. If the fan is not working correctly, would the transmission overheat in such a short time?
Possible causes?
How best to diagnose?
I'm in Houston enjoying this storm...any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
On top of the sensor your going to need fluid to refill it.
Here is a How To.

He suggested I disconnect batteries to reset computer.
Any suggestions on why it would not read?
read the Ford codes. There are basically two types of codes when it comes
to reading them. Most of the less expensive scan tools will not read or have
a very hard time with the manufacture specific codes. To read then you need
a tool that is more like the Snap On or Matco pro tools. You can also get one
of the ODB2 devices and use the FORScan with a tablet or smart phone. There
are other tools that will work. The top reader would be Ford IDS and a VCM2.
The sensor worked for (me) up to about 140F, so during warm up it was fine, and then at around ~139F would simply go beserk and show 8142F.
Clearly the transmission did not go from 139F to 8142F while I'm doing 30mph down a farm road.
Truck will continue to drive normally, though it shifts a little odd if you are in stop and go, as it uses the engine temp, and its a bit off...
Sensor is about $15 at any auto store, but you have to drop the pan.
I had Ford do it for $259.

Being stuck on an island, I don't have a lot of options on finding another way to scan it besides Autozone at the moment.
I think I'll gamble on the sensor & new fluid. I have nothing but time on my hands, lol.
