This is the second time in 40 years that I've run into this problem. So it's not that common. But these heads left the factory and have been rebuilt at least once with nobody noticing the problem.
I had an engine long ago that would overheat and I had a hell of a time trying to fix the problem. Eventually I decided ti pull the heads and found a chunk of casting flash much like that in the picture.
At that time I decided to always port the entry of the water jackets. I do both ends.
This is the piece that I removed.
I don't do much to the entry and it only takes a couple of minutes.
I'm of the opinion that improving the flow of coolant even a little is good Karma
Also just rinsing power washing out the block. My block had been hot tanked, and the amount of sand and flashing I found was crazy. So glad I decided to wash it again prior to assembly.
