I have a 1987 Ford F-150 and the cargo light on the back of the cab doesn't turn on when I open the doors. I checked the bulb and it looked fine but I replaced it anyway, and I went to test it and it still wouldn't turn on. The weird part is that when I open the doors, the dome light inside still turns on like it's supposed to. The only way to turn on the cargo light is by turning the headlight switch all the way to the left. Even though I haven't done this yet, my solution is just to cut the wires for cargo light and reconnect them to the wires on the dome light that go to the door switches. If anyone knows why this is happening or an easier way to fix it, I'm all ears.
My dad's '87 was the same. Open the door, just the dome light comes on. Turn the headlight **** and the dome light and bed light both came on. There's a diode connecting the two circuits inside the roof. The bed light was pretty much useless as a bed light, so I made it into a third brake light (red LED bulb) and mounted some proper bed lights on a separate circuit. IIRC I cut the wire at the headlight switch and moved it to the brake light switch, then cut out the diode so the dome light wouldn't come on when I hit the brakes.
If you want the cab light to come on with the dome light, you could replace the diode with a jumper wire. I removed the cab light and fished the wiring up and out of the roof until I found the diode (cast into a big rubber rectangle, can't miss it). IIRC I had to undo a ground point or two inside the cab to get enough slack on the harness to pull it out that far.
Our old 85 Lariat was that way. The cargo light only works with the headlight **** turned to the dome light position. The later 94+ trucks with the combination 3rd brake and cargo light work both that way and when the door is open.
exactly. bed light coming on with door open started around 92. before that if you wanted the bed light on you turned it on with the interior light dimmer.
